Lesli Myers-Small, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools in the Rochester
NY City School District, is separating from office after 2 years of a
4 year contract. The City won't say what the circumstances are,
whether she is resigning or getting fired. In any case, that makes 8
superintendents in the last 12 years. One clue is that the new Mayor
Melick Evans hinted that the growing violence in the City is
associated with the poor performance of the City schools. Needless to
say, a recent list was published of the 50 worst high schools in New
York State, where #1 is the worst, and increasingly less worse as the
numbers get larger, and needless to say not only is #1 in Rochester,
but of the 11 worst of the worst, 7 are in Rochester, the remainder of
those being in Buffalo and Syracuse. Ranking is by graduation rate,
with #1 being 31%. It's amusingly ironic that the liberal numbskulls
who run the system think by giving fancy names to the schools, like
"Rochester Prep" or "Early College", graduation rates can be improved.
And Mayor Melick Evans is rightly concerned about the crime and
violence, in a tabulation a couple of years ago, Rochester ranked 5th
from the bottom of the barrel, outdone by such as Buffalo, Batavia,
and Niagara Falls (honeymooners can enjoy a 5 star dinner overlooking
the falls and then get mugged after getting carjacked) A Rochester
City Councilman said of the violence here "you can go choke on your
thoughts and choke on your prayers..." in response to the nauseating
rhetoric of "our thoughts and prayers are with "Name of Victim and
Family Here", with no action taken to solve the problems but "we need
to have a conversation"... There's an old saying that "talk is cheap"
which is still true to this day. Sorry, a new superintendent won't
solve the problem, any more than Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp solved the
violence in the "old West". What solved it is that eventually all the
rowdy gunslingers took their kind out of the gene pool. So maybe the
solution is not less guns on the street, but more, to speed the
eventual attrition along.
