aside from AFAQ, general observations on human nature,
[mean comments deleted],
and things i learned as a result of my own thinking, the
following have been the 3 most interesting things i learned
from SLJ.

1. origin of otenba
2. origin of sikato
3. origin of sakura-niku

--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. origin of otenba
--------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/afaq/dutch.html
7.9.4. Which Japanese words originate from Dutch?

`otenba' (...) ontembaar
(untameable [untamable]) a tomboy

every English teacher in Japan should use this factoid
in his/her classroom.

"tame" ("apprivoiser") is also an important keyword
in the English (French) version of "The Little Prince".

this keyword is lost in the poor Japanese translation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. origin of sikato
--------------------------------------------------------------------

according to Jack Oatmon, "sikato" comes from the hanafuda
card in which the deer is looking away.

[i know such a card exists; somebody please confirm
this is indeed the origin of the word.]

--------------------------------------------------------------------
3. origin of sakura-niku
--------------------------------------------------------------------

according to Jack Oatmon, "sakura-niku" comes from the hanafuda
card in which a horse is seen with a cherry tree.

[i know such a card exists; somebody please confirm
this is indeed the origin of the word.]

he also said something about momiji-niku, botan-nabe(?).

>my favorite journalism slang is "ahiru-kisha" (duck writer).

answer:
ahiru-kisha is a lazy/dishonest (newspaper) writer who
writes without actually seeing the event/scene.

mizu ni kaku == write without seeing

but also:

mizu ni kaku == paddle water, what ducks do.
