Also, how feasible is it to "listen" to lightning strikes?
I understand that there's a low-frequency range that allows one to
listen to lightning interference as it occurs, but I believe I was told
it was a very low frequency and you would essentially have to build a
radio or find a specialized one, as the range (for obvious reasons)
isn't one which is contained in any communication bands.

I am sure I came across one from Unisys od the californian site I have
linked to elsewhere on these threads. I know NOAA do one but I don't
have a link at the moment. Sorry.
The EMF they give off affects radio in the frequencies commonly used
in the UK, though I imagine they have chosen the best they can to
avoid this. The channels you want are the most susceptible a
atmospherics.
There are devices available for the home weather fan these days that
will record such things.
Which just goes to show how really sad we all are in our obscure
little pleasures.

The last time I looked up Sprites, Jets, and Elves there weren't half
a dozen web sites on the whole Net.
The phenomenon we know as sprites and the other versions of mega-
lightning occur above cloud. They are something to do with very high
altitudes, maybe behaviour related to ozone formation.
It is the noise that disrupts the signal, that is: the EMF
interference is produced by the lightning.
We have a similar interference for Fog in Britain, with picture
degradation on TV channels.
