The Christmas Goat

Once Upon A Time ...

there was a little buck named Lord13. Like all young bucks, he
loved to run, and skip, and play 'King of the Castle' on the
bench in his pen, but he was very lonely. Even though he lived
on a farm along with *lots* of other animals, he had no 'special
friend' to play with.

One fine winter day, Randy the Dog walked up to Lord13's pen.
He stuck his nose through the fence, snuffled Lord13, and said,
"Lord13, why are you so sad? Christmas is tomorrow, and you
should be happy like me."

Lord13 sighed, "I have no special friend like all the other
animals do, and I'm lonely, Randy."

"Well," said Randy, "you should do like I do when I get lonely,
and find a hole in the fence, then run over to the neighbours
to find a special friend."

Lord13 wanted to ask Randy more about the neighbours, but at
that moment the farmer came to the door of the house and called
out "Randy! Do you want to play with me in the library?" On
hearing this, Randy's ears perked up, and without another word
to Lord13, he ran as fast as he could up the hill and into the
house.

This made Lord13 feel even more lonely, especially when he could
hear the giggling and panting from the house. He began looking
for a hole through the goat pen fence. He looked up, he looked
down, and he ran all around the edge of the pen, but he couldn't
find a hole anywhere. Lord13 stopped, and sat down dejectedly.

Just then, Harper the Pony stallion walked up to Lord13's pen.
He stuck his nose over the fence, snuffled Lord13, and said,
"Lord13, why are you so sad? Christmas is tomorrow, and you
should be happy like me."

Lord13 sighed, "I have no special friend like all the other
animals do, and Randy told me to find a hole in the fence and
find one at the neighbours, but I can't find a hole, and he's
inside with the farmer and isn't helping me look, and I'm lonely,
Harper."

"Well," said Harper, "you should do like I do when I get lonely,
and knock down the fence, then run over to the neighbours to
find a special friend."

"So you know the neighbours too, Harper?" Lord13 asked. But
Harper didn't answer him. For just at that moment the farmer's
friend from Ohio came to the door of the stables and called out
"Harper! Do you want to play with me in your stall?" On
hearing this, Harper's ears perked up, and without another word
to Lord13, he ran as fast as he could up across the barnyard and
into the stables.

Now Lord13 felt even more lonely, especially when he could hear
the thumping and snorting from the stables. He began rearing up
on his hind legs, then coming down hard and butting his head
into the boards of his pen, but he couldn't knock down the
fence. Lord13 stopped, and sat down dejectedly once more.

Just then, Buddy the Ram walked up to Lord13's pen. He stuck
his nose under the fence, snuffled Lord13, and said, "Lord13,
why are you so sad? Christmas is tomorrow, and you should be
happy like me."

Lord13 sighed, "I have no special friend like all the other
animals do, and Randy told me to find a hole in the fence and
find one at the neighbours, but I can't find a hole, and he's
inside with the farmer and isn't helping me look, and then
Harper told me to knock down the fence and find one at the
neighbour's, and I butted and butted and butted with my head,
but all I got was a headache, and now he's inside with the
farmer's friend and isn't helping me push, and I'm still lonely,
Buddy."

Buddy sat down next to the fence, and said "Didn't your mother
doe ever tell you about the Christmas Goat, Lord13?"

"The Christmas Goat?" asked Lord13. "No, I've never heard of
him."

"Well, said Buddy, "the Christmas Goat is the special friend of
all good little bucks and does throughout the world. He's
really a goat, even though he walks on two hooves like the
farmer, has long black hair, and dresses all in black. And
every Christmas Eve, he rides around in his big, white Buick,
with Danzig loud on the stereo, and makes sure no little buck or
doe is ever lonely, and always knows their special friend is
cumming."

Lord13 wanted to ask Buddy more about the Christmas Goat, but at
that moment, the farmer came to the door again and called all of
the rest of the animals inside. Lord13 watched as Buddy the
Ram, Striker and Kit the horses, and Sarah and Freckles the ewes
all ran up the hill and into the house.

Lord13 sat back down in the middle of his pen, and felt the
LONELIEST he'd ever felt before.

Just then, Lord13 thought he heard something in the distance.
He ran to the fence, stuck his head through, and listened as
HARD as he could. He could hear something coming closer, and
closer. Finally he could make out some words:

Just one kiss From my lips
Rake your soul Over burning coals
Just one touch Of my love
Make you howl Till the sun comes up.

Lord13 watched in amazement as a HUGE white thing pulled up next
to the goat pen. He could see big letters on the front of the
thing.

B U C K

"Buck!" Lord13 thought to himself. "Can it be .... ?"

The side of the white thing opened up, and a lanky figure, all
in black, got out, and stared at Lord13.

"Are ... are you the Christmas Goat?" Lord13 bleated.

The figure stirred, and smiled. He softly sang "... Just look
in these eyes, and see if they lie. All these words I speak,
you cannot deny." He moved closer, and crouched down next to
the pen.

"Now, why are you out here all alone on Christmas Eve, little
buck?" asked the figure.

Lord13 sighed, "I have no special friend like all the other
animals do, and Randy told me to find a hole in the fence and
find one at the neighbours, but I can't find a hole, and he's
inside with the farmer and isn't helping me look, and then
Harper told me to knock down the fence and find one at the
neighbour's, and I butted and butted and butted with my head,
but all I got was a headache, and now he's inside with the
farmer's friend and isn't helping me push, and Buddy told me
about the Christmas Goat, but before I could ask him anything
more, he went inside with all the other animals and the farmer,
and I'm SO lonely."

The Christmas Goat (for it was, indeed, he) smiled again, and
scritched Lord13 between his horns. "I can do better than tell
you about it, little Lord13, I'll show you."

And he did. Lord13 was astonished at how many ways you could
play with a special friend ... and just how GOOD all of them
felt! Finally, tired out from so much romping with his
WONDERFUL special friend, Lord13 fell asleep, nestled in the
arms of the Christmas Goat.

* * *

The next morning Lord13 awoke. All the other animals were back
in the pasture and barnyard, and the big white BU_CK was gone.
He shook himself, and at that moment Buddy walked by the fence.

"Merry Christmas Buddy!" called out Lord13.

"Well, you look very happy today, Lord13." said Buddy. "Did
the Christmas Goat come then?"

Lord13 smiled, and skipped a bit, thinking of his special
friend again. "Yes, Buddy, he did. And so did I!"

The End

Here he comes, kids, the Christmas Goat.
He can take you down his throat!
With his hair so long and clothes so black,
You can ride him on his back!

That was a fun story.

I love goats. People who haven't handled them probably don't think
of them as "cuddly", but their fur is soft and they like someone to lie
down with them face-to-face.

A nanny will let you lie down next to her if you use gentle
touches. If she makes to get up, a very gentle touch on the shoulder
will often persuade her to stay. Any sign of roughness and she will get
up and leave.
