A TU58 is a serial RS232 device, what is a TU58 controller?

The 8085-based board that controls the tape unit, presenting the serial
interface. Perhaps the "raw" tape transport mechanism (head, motors,
mechanics) has a different name... ?

8085? There were actually intel-stuff inside the PDP-11 ?

Quite surprising if so.

Why? There are also DEC Modules with M68K processors on them.
Dec had no problem using other people's tools when they were
the right one for the job.

Yup. Hey, the 11/23 front panel controller was run by an 8008 IIRC.

Indeed, the 11/04 and 11/34 programmer's console (KY11-LB) was driven by
an 8008 as well. The source code is given in the maintenance manual.

The DECSYSTEM-2020 (KS-10) front-end processor is an 8080, serving the same
purposes as the 11/40 in the KL-10 based systems. For that matter, the CPU
is based on AMD 2901 bitslices.

It's inside the TU58 box.

Exactly the right place for an Intel processor. Then somebody used
them to make cheap and cheerful computers and now, ~30years on...

You could buy them either as a tin box with all the bits inside, or as
a controller with one or two tape drives. Provide your own box and
psu. We were OEMs, so bought the bits to fit in our control
cubicles. A drive and a controller cost ~200 pounds.

Regards,

David P.

I thought that was the PDP 11/34 front panel.
Was there ever a front panel on an F11 box?
I don't think the 11/24 had one.

I liked the 8A front panel better than the 11/34.

It didn't latch the address so it continually updated IIRC. (I'm
mostly and 11 and Vax guy,)
