I have XXDP on an RX50 (thanks to PUTR) and was ready to fire up my PDP-11/73 for the first time to then format a Seagate ST-251.   Unfortunately, I didn't get it to boot and am wondering if I have a bad memory card and/or disk controller.  I tried three tests, described below.

Here's the config I went with in my BA23:

slot 1 - 2MB MSV11-J (M8637-EE)
slot 2 - 11/73 processor (M8190-AB)
slot 3AB - 4-port serial card (M8043)
slot 4AB - DEQNA ethernet controller (M7504)
slot 4CD - 16-bit parallel I/O (M7941)
slot 5CD - RQDX3 controller (M7555)
When I start up with the rear panel switches set to auto-boot and console mode normal, I only get:

Testing in progress - Please wait
That's it.  No other text.  It hangs with this message for 10 minutes and then I finally get impatient and restart the machine.  Same result.  I've confirmed that I didn't have the halt switch enabled.

I suspect memory, so I swap the memory and processor cards from slot 1 to slot 2 and get this instantly on power-on:

Error 104
Unexpected trap to location 004 timeout

See troubleshooting documentation

Updated PC = 173030     PCR page = 54   Program listing address = 054030

R0 = 177600     R1 = 032762     R2 = 172100     R3 = 007766
R4 = 010000     R5 = 000100     R6 = 172300     Par3 = 177737

Press the RETURN key when ready to continue

So, I run TEST and get this:

Commands are Help, Boot, List, Map and Test.
Type a command then press the RETURN key: TEST

Continuous self test - Type CTRL C to exit

Error 53
No memory in location 0

See troubleshooting

Error PC = 173244       PCR page = 11   Program listing address = 011244

R0 = 020002     R1 = 172346     R2 = 172100     R3 = 000000
R4 = 000000     R5 = 000004     R6 = 172300     Par3 = 177600

Baffling, since the memory card's switches are in the open (off) position, and I read the manual to be that that is starting address 0.

Trying another route, I pop in a known good 512K memory card (M8037-LB) into slot two.  The machine boots to a console monitor (dialog mode) with the following text:

Commands are Help, Boot, List, Map, and Test.
Type a command then press the RETURN key:  B DU0

Trying DU0

Error 20
Controller Error

The RX50 doesn't appear to do anything (no lights, no diskette spinning).  I tried DU1, same result.  I've confirmed that the Segate ST251 is jumpered to respond to the drive select 3 signal.

Sooooo, here are my questions:

1. What does the Error 20 indicate?  Is it possible that I don't have the hardware properly plugged together, or, do I have a bad floppy, bad controller, or something else wrong?
2. Is my MSV11-J memory card bad, incompatible with this CPU, or set up wrong?
3. What is the newbie limit to posts & questions?

As always, any comments are greatly appreciated!

Hello from Gregg C Levine
Have you had a chance to test the disk drive, that Seagate, in a totally different
computer? And failing that, if it's at fault, do you want another Seagate? I think I
have that number drive here. Your entitled to it, if you've got something to trade, and
can provide a shipping address for it. Off list of course.

I guess I haven't fully tested the hard disk, but I was hoping to boot off
of the RX50 floppy first, then format the Seagate. With all of the B DU0, B
DU1, B DU2, B DU3 commands, the floppies never responded. The cables are
tight. The floppy cable uses keyed connectors, so I know their orientation
is correct. I also tried booting without the hard disk plugged in - same
result, Error 20.

The RQDX3 is strapped for the correct CSR address, yes?

Of course, the quick'n'dirty way of testing the disc would be to slap
it into an old ISA Intel box with an MFM or RLL controller and thrash the
living daylights out of it. If it survives (say) a day of an old version of
PC-Tools then it's likely to be fundamentally OK.
I lost the last such machine I had (a 386DX) in a burglary in 1998,
but it was running fine when the scrotes took it, and I've no reason to
believe it would not still be working.
There are uses for antique hardware.

Looks the right sort of thing. Denver Colorado (if you're in the US).

Isn't DUxx for a RAnn type drive? I don't know what the boot
device is for a TK50. I think your error message means you
don't have the UDA50 or KDA50 controller installed.

The jumpers are in the factory default position, which puts the controller
at 17772150. Is it possible that I have a conflict with another card?
Here's the config:

slot 1 - 2MB MSV11-J (M8637-EE)
slot 2 - 11/73 processor (M8190-AB)
slot 3AB - 4-port serial card (M8043)
slot 4AB - DEQNA ethernet controller (M7504)
slot 4CD - 16-bit parallel I/O (M7941)
slot 5CD - RQDX3 controller (M7555)

Unlikely, I'd say.

I'd strip the machine to CPU, known-working memory (which in your
case I believe means the 512k card), and RQDX3.

The console "List" command indicates that DUnn supports devices RDnn, RXnn,
RAnn, and RC25.

Still no luck. I removed everything including the hard disk. So I just had
the processor card, known working memory, the RQDX3, and an RX50. Same
error, "Error 20".

So, it's either the controller (likely), or the wiring (backplane, disk
drive signal distribution backplane, or my hookups). I don't think my
wiring is bad, since the floppy disk cable connectors are keyed. Also, I
assume the connection from the back of the RQDX3 controller is straight to
the disk drive signal distribution backplane. That is, I don't think I
would twist the cable between the controller and the drive signal
distribution backplane.

Any other thoughts? I guess I need to find a known working RQDX3 and test
it out again.

Just in case, here's the system "map" and my latest boot session:

That can't hurt. I'ma fraid that I've never quite got the hang of BAxxx
RQD distribution boards as the ones in my BA123s have always Just Worked.

Oooo...that's a nifty command. What version ROMs are on your CPU
board?

I've got V8.0 on my KDJ11-B (M8190-AB).
