8. RSTS/E operating system
System comes with circuit schematics and many, many manuals which are
worth quite a bit of money if you search Ebay. Equipment is in three
(3) 6 foot bays.
Now the gory details: Shipping and packing is to be paid by the
buyer. This machine must be crated and freighted by August 14, unless
you can come with a Uhaul to Nashua, New Hampshire (where the system
is located) and carry it away yourself (It is quite large!). No
exceptions!

As you might know, prices on Epay don't say what a thing may be worth, but
instead they show how many fools there are around wasting money :-|
The manuals aren't worth anything because there are plenty of them.

I disagree with this statement. Documentation for a piece of hardware or
software can make the difference between it being something useful or a
doorstop.
For example, let us say that at my local swap meet, I find an array processor
that originally cost $100K for sale for $1. If documentation is included with
it, I might actually be able to use it. Otherwise it is just a box of parts
that might have some value to a reseller.
Sure, manuals for DEC hardware and other popular items may be obtainable, but
it is not always easy to find what you need. And not having to go through the
hassle of doing so has value.
What frustrates me is that most of the time equipment is surplused, everything
except the hardware itself goes into the dumpster. I will agree with you
that Ebay prices are not good representations of the values of items; there
will always be people around that want something more, and have more money.
To anyone that actually wants to run this system, the manuals certainly have
value.

Well, of course documentation is essential. And I agree with you that
hardware without any documentation is just a piece of hardware.

This is one of the biggest problems of computer collectors. Hardware and
software/documentation often goes different ways after being taken out of
service. Hardware is stocked in an own room or in a corner. Software/docs
are often directly dumped.

I should have said that the manuals aren't worth the Ebay prices, but of
course they are not worthless. I have been told that there are some
people who get an old working machine with all the docs and then rip out all
the parts to sell them separately just to make money instead of keeping the
machine for future generations. I've heard of a guy who did this with one
of the last working PDP-10 (I think).

That is a shame. People like that should be shot.
