Current verrsion of SimH for a PDP11 which runs under Windows 98SE in a DOS Box

I never thought that I would be asking for this again, but after 10 years
(my current version of SimH is V2.9-11 from 2002) I think it is reasonable
to check out some new code on the current version of SimH.

While I still run SimH from a Dos Box under Windows 98SE, I also
run under Windows XP. I use SimH so rarely that I never bothered
to generate a variant to run a PDP-11 under Windows 98SE for
myself. But I have some new code which needs to be tested under
as many different emulators and hardware as possible. The new
code runs correctly under the newest E11 and that old 2002 SimH.
I want to be sure that the code also runs correctly under the newest
SimH and DEC hardware.

So, can anyone please help with a link to a PDP-11 variant of SimH
that runs in a Dos Box? If you know my e-mail address, just send
me a copy if that is more convenient.

While I am running these tests, does anyone use any other emulators
than E11 or SimH? Charon used to be available, but does not seem
to be around any more.

Yes, Charon used to be available... but now Charon is orbiting Pluto.
Charon is probably there just to comfort Pluto, since Pluto is *no* longer
considered a true planet. :-)

I thought Charon PDP11 was declared obsolete several years ago. It was
replaced by Charon-somethingelse which was supposed to be a more generic
platform used for all architectures. I think that one too have been
obsoleted now.
But I might be totally wrong on that. I was working with a customers
several years ago and we had a network problem with Charon-11. SRI
eventually acknowledged the problem and decided that they would (could?)
not fix it in CHaron-11, and we needed to wait for their new product
instead. We cancelled the Charon-11 contract at that point (sorry), and
went with a competitor instead.

Yes, it was replaced by something called CHARON-TB (ToolBox) which included PDP-11 a couple of VAX models and the CHAPI package which allows you to write your own device modules and configure with CHARON, TB was dissolved though and split into CHARON-VAX and CHARON-PDP11, there's a new standalone PDP-11 now, there will be a freeware released soon this spring.

Can you advise us when that happens?

It would be interesting to determine if it is possible to
detect CHARON-PDP11 in a manner similar to the
detection of the other emulators, namely Ersatz-11,
SimH and V11.

I did not realize that V4.0 of SimH is available.

However, I will probably wait until the formal release.

In any case, I did download V3.9-0 of SimH and it still runs
successfully under Windows 98SE, so I expect that V4.0
of SimH will as well.

By the way, just in case anyone missed, V7.0 of Ersatz-11
was just released. John Wilson asked me to post that two
days ago.

What I hope is that SimH (and Ersatz-11) will also run under
current 64 bit Windows. Has anyone attempted to do so with
either SimH or Ersatz-11? I am fairly certain that the DOS
variant of Ersatz-11 will NOT be successful. The Win32 variant
should be able to do so, but it needs a test. Likewise with SimH.

I still need to get a copy of PuTty which I think is a VT100 emulator
so that I can use an emulated VT100 under SimH. Can anyone
provide the actual link address to the executable file?

I've run recent SIMH on 64-bit Windows, but I built it myself. I haven't
tried precompiled binaries. I also didn't try Ethernet.

I run the precompiled Windows binaries on Windows 7 64-bit, mostly PDP-10 but
not exclusively so.
