to win95. I would like to format my harddrive and install win95 (i want nothing
of packard bell on computer) can someone tell me how to do this. and how
do i get the cd-rom drivers installed if i don't use the recovery disk that
came with computer? i would appreciate any help on this subject as i am
not sure how to precede. I know everytime i called packard bell they told
me to reformat and reinstall everything. I Do Not want to have any packard
bell programs or info on computer.

Hello Laurie,
You need a bootable floppy with the CDROM driver. MSDOS or any
other operating system will do. Reformat the hard drive. Then run setup
from the Windows 95 CDROM. If this is an upgrade version it will ask for a
"Qualifying Application." Insert your first Windows 3.x disk in the floppy
drive and tell the setup program where it is. The setup will continue. Let
me know how this goes.

 Laurie:

I should save this so I can post it again if the need arises. Oh well here we go.

  • 1.    Take a formatted diskette with sys.com,  autoexec.bat,  format.com, mscdex.exe (That is for your CD ROM to work) config.sys, io.sys etc. The Packard Bell Recovery Diskette has this information already on it.

  • 2.    Place the formatted diskette into the "A" drive and turn your machine off and back on again. If the diskette is recognized you should be at the "A" Prompt. At the "A" Prompt type the following:

            a:>format c: /s [hit enter]

  • 3.    If the command is accepted the system will ask you if you want to format the "C" Drive? Answer "Y" to the questions. The system will then state that all files, directories and sub directories will be deleted. You then will see a progress of 10% completed,  50%,  75% etc.

  • 4.    After this is done you should check to see that "COMMAND.COM" is on your "C" DRIVE by typing from the "A" the following:

            a:> c: [enter]

you will be at the "C" Prompt

            c:>

  • 5.    type dir [enter] and it will list what you have on the "C" Drive

            c:> Directory of C:
                  command.com

There should also be some information as to what space is available etc. at the c:> Type a: [enter]
You will be at the "A" Prompt again. From this prompt its a good bet to copy the contents of your diskette to your formatted Hard Drive "C" so at the "A" Prompt type copy A:*.* C: [hit enter]

The files should now be on your "C " Drive.  After that is done you can start the machine from regular boot up and then place the operating system back on of your choice.

Attention: In order for you to just place Windows 95 back on your system you will need to have Disk 1 of Windows 3.x on the install. When you insert the CD ROM of Windows 95 in it will ask you for that prior version of Windows. You must have it before you attempt the install.

I have also read that there can be just one file from the Windows 3.x that it looks for and can be copied onto your boot disk but I forgot what its called.

If you don't have access to the CD ROM make sure that the mscdex.exe is on your hard Drive (C) you can see if the CD ROM is working by simply changing directories to "D"

c:> d: [enter]

You can then run from the dos prompt setup.exe from the "D" Prompt and the CD ROM should start the install.

I hope this helps?

John

I have done this ...

I had 2 hdds.
i copyied the win95 dir( the cab and setup files, from the CD) from the
windows95 compainion disk onto my 2nd hdd, then I started the computer from
a startup disk, and ran fdisk on C:\ and partioned it into 2 drive letters,
then formated them. the switched to the drive i copyed win95 to and ran
setup. win95 should find your hardware and ask for the drivers disks, if it
doesnt have them already...
be sure you have your drivers for you modem, soundcard, video just in case.
you can generally find these at the PB website.

Hi Laurie,

I previously owned a PB pentium75 system. I too upgraded from win3.11 to win95
& reinstalled everything from the master CD(a couple of times!). I've since found
that you CAN reformat your HD & install win95 by itself. If you've got the upgrade
version you'll most likely have to reinstall win3.11(which you can make install
disks of through 'disk image' before you format)before you can put win95 on. Win95
had no trouble detecting all of my Packard Bell hardware & configuring so it would
all work. It did it all automatically! There are a couple of useful programs on the
PB master CD that you might want to install again later though(like virtual remote,
if you want to be able to enable the 3D sound from your soundcard, if it has it).
You can install these by going to the 'INSTALL' directory on the CD and running the
appropriate setup files.
Hope this helps!

Forgot to tell you that I had to copy the win95 install files to a directory on one of
my hard drives berfore formatting, then installed from there. You could also zip(span)
the win95 install files onto floppies, copy pkunzip.exe to a disk, use the recovery
disk as just a boot disk, copy pkunzip.exe back to your formatted drive then unzip
win95 install files to a directory on the hard drive & install from there. Sounds
complicated doesn't it!!! There IS a way to load your CD rom drivers from a system
floppy on startup, but I haven't figured that out yet! Sorry
