Old PB450M+ Help Needed

I am currently wanting to upgrade an onld PB450M+ PC and I have a few
questions:
1: I believe the motherboard can take upto 128Mb of RAM in 2 X 64Mb
(72 Pin SIMMs) but is there a limit to the type of SIMMs I can use?
(EDO or any timing issues)
2: Processor Type, I curretly have a 486 SX2 50MHz (Socket 3), what
can I go upto? (486 DX4 100MHz? or can I use the Pentium Overdrive)
3: Hard Disk Size Limit, what Size hard disk can I go upto. The BIOS
is Version 4.03
4: The CDROM is currently connected via a sound card, though the it
suspiciously looks like an IDE drive, will I be able to directly
connect the CDROM to the Secondary IDE Port?

rename them autoexec.old and config.old and this way I don't lose
track of them if I ever need them again.

Andrew, you can find the original FAQ for alt.sys.pc-clone.packardbell at
Packar...@Yahoogroups.com. Written in 1997, this FAQ lists upgrade paths
for many of these older, pre-Pentium computers. Unfortunately, your model is
not listed. You might try the free diagnostic programs at www.belarc.com
and/or www.pcpitstop.com for more information on your computer and possible
upgrades.
However, it is unlikely that you will be able to upgrade your old computer
to anything approaching the power of even the most modest system available
today. You may be able to locate some upgrade parts on the auction boards or
from hobbyists, but there will be very little new merchandise available for
your computer. Using obsolete used, or N.O.S. parts can be risky because
they may not come with a warranty and may be approaching their product life
expectancy. Take a hard look at the economics of the upgrade you are
considering. New 2000+ AMD systems running XP can be found for less than
$300, and used PII, PIII, or PIV may be available for less. If you are able
to locate the parts to upgrade your CPU, increase the ram, and add a larger
disk, you could spend as much, or more than the price of a vastly more
powerful and newer system. If you are considering this upgrade because you
want to be able to run today's software, I am afraid you will be
disappointed with the result. OTOH, if this is just the challenge, you could
enjoy tinkering with your old pc.

#4 windows 98 is too much for the 450 mother board at 50mhz it will slow it
way down, hes better useing windows95 ver b.

It allows the MB to use a PODP without an interposer
It will only allow 64MB of memory
It will correctly identify the HD
It will correctly identify the processor
It is not as good as the MRBIOS one
It does place the PB logo in the bios so you can use
the Master CD
That is the one advantage over MR Bios
It is BETA
I have it working on a 450MB now
I make no guarantees
I am not using this group to sell anything
It is not free
it took me about 6 months to perfect

can't transfer pictures from my digital cam to my computer without usb

I am looking forward to the new Edition of Windows XP. Naturally its all hype and its a marketing
ploy but hey it gives a person something to look forward to.
I was in the store yesterday and they have these USB 2.0 add on external device which makes
everything run at the higher speed over 1.1
But is a body were to attach these cute $40 devices to their systems when they are running 1.1 they
will gain no benefit. People should read them labels. ha ha
I added 2 USB 2.0 high speed to my home build. The mother board had USB 1.1 but while loading the
newer add in card (5 usb connections in both for a total of 10 usb ports) I also gleaned at combo
cards that have an added Firewire port as well. Est. cost $45 but I now read that USB is going to
be the standard over the others when everyone held out this hope for the firewire standard and
bluetooth. How fickle we are with our toys. My old Packard Bell Legend 60 Supreme even at an
overdrive speed of 120 MHz. never had such connections and it came standard with Windows 3.1 and
you got the certificate for the Windows 95 upgrade.

Found a BIOS upgrade that will allow me upgrade it to a DX4 100 MHz.
Though I found out the MB does not support EDO RAM.
I think I worded question 4 wrong, what I meant to say was:
Is the CDROM connected through the Sound Card an IDE drive?

and it was a P4 1.8 or 2.0 MHz. with all the goodies. So for $500 ($300 more) you get the newest OS
and the best sound and video and cd burner and dvd player and USB 2.0 just check it out.
Or I was in CompUsa and I noticed for $229 a new box with a P4 2.8 I think a 60GB hard drive and
USB 2.0 and firwire and 10/100 LAN and a load of other things. Bare bones no monitor but that is
for $29 more than your up grade. Again points to ponder.

It just depends where you buy from, the cpu only costs $12.95=pentium/233,
and as far as the win98
a few friends have it in their collection so all I have to do is go
pick up the cd from them.

My friend in the UK has removable drive bays. In fact he bought a few over for me to try a few
years back. They alas are not that stable on my systems. I put them back in their boxes and packed
them away. I opted for the make your own system approach and I never looked back.
Like I told you before in a prior post, I just bought the add on card for my home builds and the
device works great. the USB 1.1 is just not fast enough for anything other than a Mouse or
keyboard.

Well this is many years ago now, so lets see they were made I believe
by Syncom which was no help since numerous companies come up under
that name.
But yes they were hot swappable. In fact my friend came over and set
them up and they worked pretty well at first. It was the fact that at
the time I think because of the other devices on the chain (Ribbon)
that may have caused the problems. After they were set in the racks
and bolted down and then you had to lock and unlock them with a key
and then remove them for different OS and or different sets of data,
it was just a royal pain.
Today I use the USB Thumb Drives between the computers and they are
much faster and stable then the latter. And have a 10 year life span.
Not bad I would say.
They are (Removable drive bays) in their original boxes and in the
attic with the rest of the memories of my computers over the years. Ha
ha

My lord that is a long time ago, an Atari. It reminds me of my TI
coupler system that used thermal paper. I have heard some folks still
keep their old Vic 64's.
In the old days I was an operator for the state and we just moved over
from an old Sperry Univac to the Honeywell. Back then it was not
personal computers but "time sharing" and I remember when Microsoft
had their first service for $4.95 a month (I had it) and AOL, Prodigy,
and CompuServe were the dial up providers of choice outside of the old
BBS. In fact I still have the old disks for the WOW Internet service
that never got off the ground. I posted on CompuServe for many
expensive years both in the Packard Bell Forum and many others. Of
course this was way before AOL stuck their hands into the service and
ruined it.
