I have a newer PB MM601 system. I recently had to reformat the hard drive
and reinstall Win 98 from the upgrade CD. Thankfully, I didn't get all the
proprietary PB software on my system. Unfortunately, I also lost my access
to other software like Word and Money that came with my computer because
software tracker was not installed after I reinstalled Win 98 (I used the PB
Win 98 upgrade disk, but I didn't upgrade from Win 95). I called the
technical support and the guy said it was impossible to get any of the
software back without reinstalling Win 95 and then upgrading. I explained
that this was not going to happen. He said I was out of luck.

BUT, I also emailed the technical support and they responded with the
ANSWER! They told me to:
For installation of your system's Software Tracker, follow the steps below.

1. Place Master CD into the CD-ROM.
2. Click the Start button.
3. Click on Run.
4. Type the following 'open' line:

D:\BU\D\Win95.Dat\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\GTS\GTINST.EXE D:\APPS\218.GTS INSTALL

This restored the software tracker to my system. Your CD may have different
directories for the GTINST file.

BTW, if you open GTZ.dat with WordPad you can see all the software located
in the GTS folder.

In article <6sfn4d$lri$1...@oak.prod.itd.earthlink.net>,

Once again its like I said before, Send the e-mail and you have a 50-50 chance
of getting someone who knows what he\she is talking about.

Call that damn 800 number and you get complete IDIOTS. Like always the left
hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing etc. How could the idiot on
the phone not read the help database that the e-mail support people are
reading?

Actually, I was impressed for the first time by tech support the other
evening. I tried to upgrade my PB 680 bios with the upgrade on the PB site,
and it ERASED but didn't flash my bios. After several calls to local
outfits, I was told the only answer was to get a new chip from PB. I called,
and was referred to another number.....that was disconnected! I called back,
and was given a number that rang back to tech support. The third individual
I spoke to was great! He actually checked the moyherboard diagram, and found
it was a soldered chip and couldn't be replaced. He then checked and found
there was a jumper setting to recover bios! Of course, I would have to pay
for "Premium Support" to be told how. To cut to the chase, this individual
looked up the jumper settings and gave them to me gratis! First time I've
ever received support from PB tech support. (A few more like him would do
wonders for the companys' rep)!

i figured out how to install software off of the cd, but some of the
programs require their own cd to run. Was I supposed to get these CD's with
my computer? I recently bought a PB at Officemax and it included software
such as MS Works, Encarta, Abe's Oddworld, Quicken, etc. But some of the
programs say (CD Required) by their names, and the only CD's that came with
my computer were the Recovery CD, Companion CD, and Encarta CD. None of
these run the other CD software. Can anyone help?

Hey, I bought mine at Office Max too and get this, what a coincidence, I got all
the accesory CDs, but the Master CD and the boot disk were missing, I had to
call PB up and bit** them out to get my master cd and boot disk, what a pain. Is
it Office Max or Packard Bell thats the problem? Hmmmmmmmm...........I wonder?
