I have some auto races on VHS that I want to transfer to one of my
computers. I would like to use composite from the VCR to the computer.
I have three computers - two modern Dells and one old Compaq from 2000. I
would
prefer to use the old Compaq running Windows ME since all the races are
going to
go to that hard drive eventually.
Anyway, what do I need? A video capture card? Any recommendations?
Transferring VHS to a computer is pretty simple isn't it? Just put in the
card, hook up the VCR, and play the video. Right?
My Dell laptop has a slot for an express card. Do they make video
capture cards
for express slots?
Thanks!
I like the Hauppauge Win TV PVR USB2. Make sure it is the 'higher end'
model that does hardware encoding. Runs about $125. You can go
cheaper, but.....
The advantage is it runs USB2 so it is easy to move from machine to
machine. Probably won't work on the WinME Compaq though.
$125? I was hoping a little cheaper! lol. Thanks tho. I will look it
up.

I'd second Tom's advice here...Hauppauge Computer Works makes pretty good
products that work well. I've got an older PCI TV tuner card of theirs in an
HP Vectra PII that still works great, although capturing video from it is a
real chore for that computer.

Just bought the ADS TECH XpressDX2 from AMAZON for $86. Put the unit
betwee my VCR and the computer USB input and away we go, The software is
easy to to load and use. You need Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Doing old
home tapes.
I didn't know I could go the USB way. I will definitely start looking
for one.
Thanks! - Go Helio!
Check out the reviews on Amazon. Start with "Plextor" or "Dazzle" and
follow the links. User reviews are the most helpful. The Hauppauge
device Tom mentioned comes as a card or external USB. Do you want to
be able to record TV shows right on your computer or just transfer
tapes? If you go the Hauppauge route make sure that you get one for
your version of Windows -- there is one specifically for Windows Media
Center.

Another solution is to use a Camcorder (such as my 6 year old Sony mini-DV
DCR-PC110E) which
accepts a VHS signal into the Line input from the VCR and then outputs using
a Firewire connection into my Computer which has a Firewire input card and
various capture software.
The signal transfer can be done either directly or by first recording the
video to the camcorder tape then output via the Firewire port.
Alternatively I can record the incoming VHS into the camcorder memory
(64Mb) and then output it as mpeg file via the USB port
