Same here. What is even worse is that they tell you it is easy to make
the desktop look like windows. BS and then some.....

I have tested a bunch of distros and can't really find any that are
truly user friendly if you're not a real geek.

If the only thing you use it for is web surfing and E-mail you're ok
because Firefox and T-Bird work good. If you run a business good luck....

I installed Ubuntu on an old Inspiron 6000 laptop just to see if I
could get it to work. It installed ok and everything is working fine.

It runs great with openoffice and firefox that comes with it.

Openoffice word processing and spreadsheet works fine.

But yeah, outside of Openoffice, Ubuntu with its archaic commands is
not easy to use.

Exactly. They're not business machines because the heavy databases,
graphics, etc. Just aren't there. At home it's fun though.

I just can't believe that Ubuntu survived official review of
the look. It's as bad as Windows 8 Metro.

PS: I find Linux Cinnamon easy and organized.

How dare you call Linux a cult leader...

The users don't beat you up verbally and complain that they are the true
OS ( Well maybe a little.... OK A LOT)

They don't constantly bleat that they have the safest OS ... WEll not
ALL the time, much)

They don't keep saying that it is completely ready to become a
replacement for .....

OK You're right it's a cult......

I agree though. The only way Linux is going to gain mainstream OS levels
will be to make it very familiar and easy to move from the dominant OS
in use.

On another topic, Apple cultists....

That too.

The problem with most of the ones I deal with seems to be that
regardless of the problems and known faults they still get that glazed
look when apple announces a new product they "must have"

My niece fell under the spell getting her laptop two years ago. She
believed all the hype that she "had" to have a mac even when the school
she attends told her straight out that they don't support them and that
most of the software she would need wasn't available for them.

I became the support line. She has been having WiFi problems so I talked
to a few friends and found that it is a known problem with no real
repair. Great.

I don't like the new interface either.
Very hard to find quickly what you want.

ON THE OTHER HAND it did find automatically my printer and installed the
correct driver. Sweet. This has been my major problem with other
printer. I cannot drop to the "dos" screen because I don't know the
language.

I tried it, but the additiional install of WIn 7 smashed it all.

With each day the usabilty of computer is spoiled one step more. Think
of it: the bes typing editor ever, WordStar, had it last relase in 1992.
That is 21 years ago. And it still by far is the best typing editor.
What did all the idiots do in these 21 years of their constantly making
things better?

It all is a damned shame.

BTW: Do you know the word "cloud-paging"? What an idiocy. Instead of
having software on the very own PC, at hand ALL TIME, the §$%&/()=? for
each task download the software from somewhere in the WWW. Some fin day
the $%&/()OP realized that this slows down performance. So they invented
something magical, something amazing, something WONDERFOOL:
"cloud-paging".

The mechanism is very simple: instead of downloading the whole program
as one big chunk, the separated it into small pieces, and download only
those needed (and the rest later).

Now, look at good old WordStar, the masterpiece of art, at the beginning
of the 80-ies. Yes, that is 30 years ago! WordStar used "overlays", that
is software pieces, which are loaded from external storage (floppy
drive, then) into RAM. RAM was expensive, so only perhaps 48kByte were
installed. No place for a large program. But by loading the .OVR pieces
at the time needed (overwriting the one already in RAM), this could
easily be handled.

THREE DERCADES AGO we had a wonderful technique, and now the idiots
present us some groundbreaking new stuff? No. Idiots are idiots. And the
real genius was in the 80-ies, but marketing §$%&/()=? tramped on that
and sold us shit, shit, shit.

High tide to point to the real facts of technique, of state of the art,
and of the art of programming.

Cygwin under XP

Ubuntu is fine except for graduate students always changing the compilers slightly,
producing bit rot in otherwise working programs.

Staying with a fixed version of Cygwin has solved that.

I think this cloud business is really software for rent or simply how
to boost revenue for the server in the cloud. "New and improved" is
not always true as you pointed out !!!!

must be laws against shitty software.

It AGAIN is parasitism. In the old days the programs on mainframes were
not sold, they were rented. The PC with its own storage and the new way
to distribute software and right of usage eroded that source of income.
So the software developers try to find ways to get back the full
control.

One idiocy were "thin clients", where the software was stored on inhouse
server HDDs instead of using HDDs on the local PCs. But this financial
"advantage" was none. The system got weaker, and any system problem
would simultaneously affect hundreds of thousands of employees. But the
pea counters are too stupid to realize that. And the BOfHs were keen on
whipping the users in any way they could.

Now we have the next step, shifting vom inhouse servers to outhouse
servers. The idiocy got worse.

It is not that easy.

1. Many people are forced to use Microsoft crap because their bosses
order them to do so.

2. To make it much worse: the so highly acclaimed heroes of the Linuxes
COPY the Microsoft crap.

So what would you do instead of copying the Apple and Windows user interfaces and software? And how would it make Linux (one of the hundreds of distros) and easier sell?

It's easy to complain. It's more difficult to do constructive solutions... Ben Myers
