The latest Consumer Reports (June), rates the Dell P991 higher than a
Sony Trinitron in the 19-inch monitor comparison.
Who makes the Dell monitors?
I originally had decided on a 17 in. Trinitron but am now considering
the 19 in. Dell M990 because of the review and because it is not as
deep as the other two.

thanks for your input

I'm confused here. The P991 *is* a Trinitron. I'm looking at mine as I
type this response. You say that you are now considering the M990
"...because of the review". Didn't you just say that "Consumer Reports
(June) rates the Dell P991 higher...". The M990 is *not* a Trinitron; it is
Dell's standard 19" monitor.

The P991 *is* a Trinitron, but is it a *Sony* Trinitron? "Trinitron" is
just a technology that Sony licenses out and there are many vendors that
manufacture their own Trinitron-based tubes: Mitsubishi, Mag, etc.
Actually, I don't even know that Sony can even sell the licenses anymore as
I believe their patent ran out a year ago or so.

You are right. CU is comparing a Dell trinitron with a Sony trinitron.

I just got my new system which includes the DELL M990. IMHO the 990 is a
POS. It is very grainy. My father just bought a no-name 19" from Sam's
Club for $299.00 that is .26dpi amd it blows my 990 right off the desktop.
I would be very surprised if the M990 "really" has a resolution of .26dpi.
My previous monitor was a Magitronic 17" .28dpi and it "IS" much clearer
than the M990. I know because I still have it and have hooked it up to my
new DELL XPS T800r.

I was considering sending it back and opting for the P991 till I read all
the negative posts here from P991 users. Plus I have to pay the shipping
back to DELL if I decide to return the M990. The last monitor I shipped was
a 17" to California. Using my local Mailboxes Ect., it costs me almost
$80.00 to send it and that was via regular UPS ground.

By the time I ship back the M990 (POS) and pay for shipping and figure in
the difference in price to move up to the P991, I could just go over to
Sam's Club and get the no-name $299.00 like my Dad's and be done with it.

My advice, skip a monitor from DELL altogether and go get a Viewsonic or
some other monitor. You will be better off.

I have a question to those who had/have a P991.

I have ordered almost 10 Dell workstations with 19" Trinitron monitors at
work for the past year, first P990 and then P991. I myself am using two
P990's (work and home) and have been very pleased with them. When Dell
started shipping P991, I was really impressed with the flatness. I recently
recommended a refurbished P991 to a friend of mine since the price is good
($200 less than a new one). Noticing it doesn't look used at all, I went
ahead and ordered one for my wife.

As soon as I set it up, I noticed a "problem" with the monitor - the text
lines (don't know how to express more precisely) look extremely thin. In
fact the text looks more like on a notebook LCD display. I don't
particularly like it - I don't have a notebook :-). I think it's going to be
hard on the eyes (haven't stared at the monitor long enough to notice it
yet). Maybe that's the reason the monitor was returned to Dell in the first
place?

The two P991's my colleagues use at work don't seem like this. Did I get a
"problematic" Trinitron tube? I really don't want to ship it back for
replacement due its weight. I don't know if my can get used to it. She's not
sensitive to these details, though. But her eyes are very bad.

Any comments?

Thanks,

Shudong

Sony is the OEM for the P991 - tube, electronics, chassis, housing ...etc.,
the whole nine yards. The P991s sold in the U.S. market are made by Sony in
their Mexico and San Diego factory.

Actually, Sony has been very unwilling to license the Trinitron tube to
other CRT vendors. Dell did get Sony to let Nokia license build the P790 in
Europe with Trinitron tubes, but Nokia was not allowed to put the Trinitron
silkscreen on the front of the monitor bezel.

Sony's patent on the Trinitron aperture grill technology may have expired,
but the trademarked (and with extremely high brand equity) name of Trinitron
belongs to Sony alone.

The OEM for the M990 is Philips (with Philips tube).

Mitsubishi has their own aperture grill tube (Diamondtron) which competes
directly with the Trinitron - and has done well in reviews.

MAG basically doesn't even exist anymore, except maybe in name only.

I believe if they call it a Trinitron it must be a Sony tube, that's their
trademark. Other tube makers have to call it something else (like just
"aperture grille").

M990 is a standard 19" Dell monitor
P780 is the FLAT 17" Vega style Trinitron.
P990 is the older type Trinitron with curved horizontal glass, but
vertically flat (isn't bad if you get a good one, they don't make them
anymore)
P991 is the VEGA style FLAT glass version with the excellent colours and the
concave distortion, LOL..........

If you can put up with some "concaveness" in the screen definitely go for
the P780 , 17" monitor if your after a 17'' monitor of course.

I have a 19" Vega style Trinitron here and sometimes I think to myself its
to big to stare at all day, you need a desk that has depth so you can set it
back a bit .

Hope this sorts your confusion out......................

Yes I can relate to that also I have a p991 and I know what your saying, my
friend has a p780 and its crisp.......... mine here is a little furry in the
corners and it has given me eye strain for the last few days....You have to
play with the settings, convergence etc and it takes ages to get the correct
look........

PS: The "thinness" only affects "default" fonts. Bold fonts look better, so
are larger fonts. The monitor is running 1280x1024 @85 Hertz.

I'm running 1280x1024 - that's the resolution I like and that's why I
replaced the old 17".

I've tried all settings on the monitor - nothing can change that. Bold fonts
are OK - they are not thin by themselves anyway.

Maybe I should swap my P990 with my wife. I have better vision and may get
used to it after a while.

Is this typical of this new line Dell Trinitrons? None of the P990's I
purchased for work (at least 6) has this "property".

Thanks,

Shudong

My M990 says Trinitron and Dell. Have they changed it?

There is a problem with some of the new Sony tubes. I recently had to send back
two Sony monitors because of distortion in the corners and around the edges. The
third one works great. Once you get one that works you can really see the
problem. I suspect that this will effect the monitors being shipped by Dell.

Then you don't have a M990. The M990 is a Philips monitor, the P990 is Sony
Trinitron.

You might want to reconsider. I got my new B866r today with the P991 monitor -
it's gorgeous! BTW, my old PC has a Sony 17" Trinitron approx. 2 years old.

I got the P991 and I love it. It's sitting on a desk right beside my
old Trinitron Dell 17" which I liked but now looks dull and washed
out compared to the color on the p991, not to mention the size and
clarity.

I agree. My P991 has a clarity of image and depth of colour that is a joy to
work/play with. Very impressed. So are my colleagues and friends.
