Hello All,

I got my Dimension 8200 with the Intel 1.9 GHz processor, Win XP home on
1-24. I just installed a Plextor 8/4/32 cd burner (that I took out of my old
Compaq 5240) in addition to the DVD drive.

Had to be the easiest install ever. They provide excellent instructions in
the paper manual on how to install a drive. And they provide the rails to
install additional drives right in the easy open case. No tools required to
open the case!!!

See if I ever go back to a Compaq after seeing how easy it is to work on a
Dell. I would have had to fork out $45 US for the drive rails on a Compaq.

$ 45.00 for rails, i'm in the wrong business ! Opened my current Presario
the other day, no tools required to open the case and there were no rails on
the drives. (the raw drives fit in it's cavity snuggly) Older Compaqs had
rails, I used the inexpensive plastic ones a few times.

Rob,

I am thrilled that Compaq learned a lesson about the drive rails. I had to
duct tape my CD and CDRW together and hang them from 1 set of rails because
I couldn't find Compaq rails to fit the case.

Vickie

If you can't fix it duct it!!

I have my 2-years old Presario 5710 desktop. I bought a DVD driver from CompUSA
the other day. I did not need the rails, I slided the DVD driver into the
Presario desktop, no problem.

I compare Dell and Compaq, they are really the same. Dell is actually in the
offense to imitate Compaq:

1. $50 rebates,
2. www.compaq.com/tv
3. Dell relocates notebook manufacturing to Compaq factories in Taiwan,
4. Compaq retires existing models as soon as new Intel/AMD designs are made
available. Dimension 8400 is the now latest model. (Dimension 8200 is
retired?)
5. Compaq offers more FREE memory, Dell offers FREE dvd/cdrw. It is confusing,
but I think Dell is about $20-30 more.

Cheers.

...you mean losing money and market share and being bought out by a printer
company?

I must've missed that over at cnnfn.....

ps- they're not 'really the same', especially in ease of service.

Amen, brother! I have owned 5 computers since 1986 and my last one, a
Compaq Presairo, was the shortest used computer I have ever owned. I
usually keep a computer for 4 or 5 years but I couldn't stand it anymore
after almost 1 1/2 years. A Compaq is good only if you keep the original
software and not add any more and you sure cannot upgrade any hardware
componets. This was the first computer I had that I could not upgrade the
processor. Plus the fact I could not install no more than 48 MB ram! They
use too much propritery crap in their computers. I sold the thing for $50
just to get it out of the house. So you won't sell me on that "they are the
same" stuff.

"Printer company?" You obviously have no clue. sort of like calling
General Motors a minivan company.

you've obviously a small sense of humor. btw, this is a _dell_ group.

lighten up. anyone suggesting that there is no difference between Q machines
and Dells is downright silly. Worse yet, given the current economic
environment and circumstances, to suggest that Dell would emulate Compaq is
just short of preposterous.

Read their financials.
More like "Printer supplies company" now.

Ford, of course, is a truck company :-)

1. My sense of humor is fine. You simply didn't like my comment.
2. I wasn't the one to bring HP into the discussion. Take the group
status up with them.

Since *I* did not state any of the above, I'm not sure why you wasted
your time saying that.
I happen to agree with you.

Which would suggest we're *both* "clueless"?

As far as "group status", the message was crossposted, which I removed in my
reply.
