I have two dead laptops, both 15” Dells.  The I1520 is pretty new, but the bottom half of the LCD doesn’t have backlight.

The I6000 is older, but the LCD is fine.  Hinges are toast though.

Will the panel from the 6000 fit in the 1520 as a direct replacement?  How hard is it?

Trying to salvage one working laptop!

Thanks,

Tom

i suppose there is a chance that the inspiron 6000 lcd could work in the inspiron 1520.  i would start by visiting support.dell.com to look up the original system configurations for each of these systems using their repspective tag numbers to see if the panels are the same type.  if you check the 'warranty status' you will then see a tab for original configuration.  there you can determine what type of display that you have in each.  both offered wxga (without truelife) but both had many other options that the other did not.  the 6000 additionally offered wsxga+ and wuxga.  the 1520 additionally offered wxga truelife, wsxga+ truelife, and wsxga+ truelife.  if you don't have the same panel then you would also need the inverter, and that is probaly not compatible with the other machines system board.  there is a shop called moniserv.com that does laptop lcd repairs for reasonable flat rate prices.

ps.  you can get a replacement screens on ebay for under $100, but you should get the same type that you currently have.  also, you might find the video interesting as it shows the process with a inspiron 6000.  the rubber screw covers rarely stay on once removed and so when i get a replacement lcd i always ask for a replacement set but dell rarely actually sends them.  also, i removed teh entire screen assembly from the machine to make installation easier, but repair people typically look for any shortcut they can and so usually repalce the lcd with the assembly still attached to the system.

Tom,

I think I would go for a 1520 replacement screen that is known to be
compatible. The task of replacing is pretty easy.

The only thing wrong with the Inspiron 6000 is the hinges? Not sure
what is wrong exactly, but replacing the hinges is only tricky because
it involves disassembling the entire LCD screen. Maybe the place in the
main body where is the hinges attach is damaged? Maybe the hinge screws
simply need tightening?

A tiny, tiny dab of rubber cement on each of the rubber screw covers
gets them to stick pretty well... Ben Myers
