Sometimes, if you call Dell, they can give you a UPS tracking number
before it turns up on their website. It won't do you much good though.
It won't show up in UPS's tracking system until right about the time it
arrives at your house. Big shippers like Dell have their own
pre-assigned blocks of tracking numbers. They assign these as soon as
the computer leaves the factory. They use bulk shippers to send the
computers to the regional UPS warehouse. So it actually has a UPS
tracking number for a couple of days before UPS even sees it. Also, at
this time of year, the UPS people sometimes skip some of their location
scans in the assumption that their customers would rather have an
on-time delivery thank know where their late delivery is.
