Anyone have any experience with the Evergreen chips? The newest one is a AMD
chip with bios added by Evergreen.

It would take my Dimension XPS P90c up to 333mhz K6-2..

I'm tempted.. It's $199.

I upgraded my Dimension XPS P90c with an Evergreen MxPro 240 back at the end of
October.

I am very pleased with the results.

You say that the chip comes with a bios update?
I was told by Dell customer support that I couldn't update my
Dimension XPS P166s!!
Can you post more information on this chip and where the docs are?
Thanks,
Andy

Not much of a bargain.

For $199 you could replace both the cpu and motherboard. End result
being much faster cpu than a 333 and a motherboard with newer features
as well like AGP & USB.

It's a BIOS update made by EVERGREEN, not one made by DELL.

For only a little more you can get a new super 7 K6-2 350 that will be much
faster.

Hey, you guys are talking apples and oranges.
The original question in this thread (from Stuart) was if the *new* K6-2
based Evergreen upgrade processor would work in a P90C. Then there was
a reply (from Steven) that he was happy with his Evergreen MXPro240
upgrade in the same machine. Well here is the stroy as I know it:
The Evergreen MXPro 240 upgrade procesor is based ion the WinChip
microprocessor. The WinChip is a substitute chip for the Intel Pentium
and works with the same BIOS. It's only down side is that the 240
version is based on a motherboard speed of 60Mhz (which the chip
multiplies by 4 to run at the internal speed of 240 - the MxPro 200 is
an overall better performer but you have to adjust a jumper in your
system to set the bus speed from 60 to 66Mhz). The *new* Evergreen
processor, being based on a AMD K6-2 requires a BIOS upgrade. Other AMD
based overdrive processors have not been supplied with BIOS upgrade that
work with Dell. To the best of my knowledge only http://www.mrbios.com
has a upgrade BIOS for this model Dell that supports AMD processors
(provided that are installed in a voltage regulator like that which
comes with a'overdrive' type processor). Considering that the MrBIOS
sell for $80 itself, this quickly becomes to omuch money to sink into a
aging PC.

I got a winchip 2 240 and heat sink fan for $85 including shipping. I
dropped it in my xps P133c and it works great. The winchip 2 is much
better than winchip 1. The 240 (4x60) beats the 200 (3x 66) in
CPUmark99 benchmark. but not by alot. 13.5 for 240 and 12.8 for 200.
Dropping the bus speed hurts but the 40Mhz makes up for it. My P133
chip gave me a 9.28 score so the upgrade gave me about a 45% increase
in windows performance. FPU (floating point) performance was improved
70%.

I e-mailed Evergreen Technologies and asked about compatability and
got the attached reply. I'm going to try one.

Sorry, couldn't send as attachment..........let me try again

Thank you for your interest in Evergreen Technologies. According to
the
system information you provided, I would recommend the Spectra 333.
The
Spectra 333 supports most single processor 75MHz and higher speed
Pentium
processor based systems. The upgrade is compatible with both socket 5
and 7
platforms as well as motherboards based on the newer Super-7 platform.

Key Features:

* Increases performance up to 300% and beyond
* Compatibility adapter
* BIOS update CD for specific systems
* AMD-K-2 microprocessor
* Windows 95 certified
* 3DNow! instructions for better gaming, imaging, video & sound
* MMX instruction compatible
* 64K of L1 cache
* Universal voltage support
* Lifetime warranty

PC users can install the upgrade. The installation guide contains
easy-to-follow, illustrated step-by-step instructions. The Spectra 333
will
run at full speed in all systems that support a 66MHz bus. It will
also work
with systems that do not have the recommended bus speed (e.g. 60 MHz),
but
may not achieve full 333Mhz performance.

You can purchase the Spectra 333, Evergreen Part no. 90-M333-AA0,
through
hardware catalogs such as Tiger, CDW, Global, MicroWarehouse,
Computability,
PC Mall, and Insight. The MSRP is $259, but you can find it for about
$199
through our resellers after the $30 rebate.

If not completely satisfied, Evergreen's resellers have return
policies in
place to insure a quick resolution. Please double-check your resellers
return policy before you purchase the upgrade. Should you have any
problems
after installation, a toll free tech number will be included with the
Spectra 333. This number is designated solely to support the Spectra
333.
