I getting ready to buy a I7000 laptop. I don't like the fact that the built
in modem is a WinModem. I heard that the xircom realport LAN/modem is the
best option but has a high price tag at $349.
Anyone with an opinion?

Available for $310 from provantage.

I use the cardbus realport combo card with an I7000 and love it.
Installation was fast and easy, just disabled the internal modem in
bios.

Performance is good on both network and modem.

On the other hand, performance was just as good with the internal
modem. However, i do some net quaking, so i prefer the hardware modem
over the winmodem. When on the road a extremely battery dependent, it
may be best to pop the xircom out and use the internal modem.

My apps are all basic so the winmodem that came with the I-7000 is fine ...
I connect mostly at 52,000 and rarely below 49,000. No tweaking.
