My Inspiron 5000 laptop came with a three year "next day on site" warrantee,
whiich leads one to expect that in case of system failure the owner will only
lose usage for a day or two, which is a reason why I am a Dell customer for
years now
.
Well, what a lie!

The system started overheating, you actually can boil eggs on it. After day of
running diagnostiocs the tech decided I need a replcament system. You will
think they will try to expedite?

I was told it can take a week, is that next day service?!

I was given an "exchange reference number" (had to give them a credit card
number for it) and tried afterwards to follow on order on web - "invalid
number", on automated phone - "number not on system. Calling customer service I
get everytime a different person - they do not have, or jst refuse to give, an
extension number. Quote times of 10 and 15 days for order to be fulfilled.

After dozens of calls, I still have no order number or explanation why one was
not issued. I have no way to track the system, no one to serve as contact (new
orders - you have at least a salesperson).

That is no "warrantee", no "service" --------CAVEAT EMPTOR!

At least you get your laptop. I placed an order last week on their UK
website and was given an "Internet reference" number. However when I rang
the sales department they can't even trace it with this number. Also I was
told at the time of order that I should receive a written order confirmation
within 3 days and a number to use their order status function on the
website. Guess what: now it's 6 days and I haven't got anything - the sales
department can't trace my order either. What am I supposed to do???

I had a similar exchange problem with my I3800, actualy 2 exhanges...3
laptops. The first exchange involved building a complete new system to
my original specs and the second was justing sending me a refurbished
system with free upgrades from the original specs (128 from 32megs
RAM, 20 from 12gig hard drive, and a pcmcia modem from an internal
modem). In both cases, all I got was an "exhange" number which nobody
at Dell could find hence no way track its progress.

The good news was I did receive the exchange units within a week.

BTW...I ended up sending the second exhange, even with the free
upgrades, back.

well what I 've ordered was a special promotion that is no long available.
Also I don't want my credit card to be charged twice and two machines
turning up!

That's not the point. The point is why did the first one get lost? From the
NGs I believe I am not the only one who has this problem.

This is my favorite ploy with bad customer service. Call directory
assistance for, what is it for Dell, Austin TX. Get a general number
for the Corporate HQ. Then ask for someone in Customer Service (this
of course would be some higher person at the Corporate level), BS if
you have to, to get a number, claim your from some other corp. Then
when you get the corporate cust. service person bitch them out, climb
the latter if you need too.

Some times the monkeys in the call centers just need a little push
from someone at corporate. Just knowing the names, as in "well, when
I talked to John Doe at corporate HQ, he said you should..." always
helps.

Don't forget to keep notes and log everything.

Won't work; "corporate" and customer service are in the same buildings.
When you call the operator in Round Rock Texas (not Austin) and ask for
customer service, you are placed in the customer serivce phone queue.

If you are going to lie and pretend to be from another company, don't be
surprised when you don't get treated well - you reap what you sow.

Will somebody, please, post the name and phone extension for somebody in Dell
Customer Service or even a Dell executive.
Or just email me the information.

Well, considering that Dell is a publically traded company, you should
be able to find some sort of information somewhere I'd think.

That's tricky then. It's all a matter of getting the right phone
numbers. There are always direct dials into an area of a company.

True, using false pre-tenses might cause problems, and probably would
be a last resort. Usually just asking can get you somewhere. I once,
representing a small company got names & extentions of high people in
the legal department of a large shipping company, just by asking.
