Does anyone know what the availability of drivers is for the Optiplex GX620?
We have some that are three years old which should be capable of running
Windows 7 with a bit more RAM and HDD but not 100% sure we can get the
drivers.

Cheers, Rob.

Why not the Vista drivers for the GX620? Also, it uses standard,
run-of-the-mill (not pejorative, either) hardware, much of which would
be built into Win 7 already... Ben Myers

I found a couple of posts that suggested that W7 didn't have the drivers out
of the box. It did surprise me because I though Microsoft had worked hard on
the drivers and supporting a 3 year old Dell would be on their radar.

Cheers, Rob.

Microsoft works very little on drivers. The Independent Hardware
Vendors (IHV's) work VERY hard on the drivers, doubly hard when the
driver model changes, because they know how their hardware works.
Microsoft changes the Windows driver almost as often as I change
underwear, in contrast to Linux where they've got it right. Then
Microsoft gives the IHV's drivers a spin through the Windows Hardware
Qualification Lab (WHQL) and possibly certifies them as WHQL-compliant,
sort of like a Good ComputerKeeping Seal of Approval. For a fee, of
course. Ka-Ching! Finally, Microsoft cannot fit every driver onto an
installation CD, so IHV's jockey for space on the DVD. (Typically, older
hardware drops off the DVD, but drivers may be available from the IHV,
or maybe not.) At a price. Ka-Ching! Then you buy Windows 7.
Ka-Ching! And then you have to buy a book and courses that tell you how
to use Windows 7. Ka-Ching! And all manner of people spend money on
courses to become Microsoft certified this or that. Ka-Ching! It's all
about the Benjamins.

BTW, Dell is not an IHV. Intel, Creative Labs, AMD (now owning ATI,
too), nVidia, HP (printers, scanners), and various other chip and card
mfrs are IHVs... Ben Myers

I am running windows 7 ultimate (final release 7600) on a 3 year old Dell
E520, I installed it as a upgrade to vista home premium. there was 1 issue,
my usb hub, which, I unplugged, re-plugged and its all good. I have a pent
2.66 dula core, 1300 ati vid card (legacy) the on board ethernet & sound, a
Kodak camera, a dymo 400 label printer, a canon mp600 printer, seagate
external drive and the dell media keyboard with the volume control on
it...so, I am saying, run the windows 7 compatibility wizard from the m/s
site, and go for it unless it comes up with a show stopper.

From dictionary.com: pejorative - having a disparaging, derogatory, or
belittling effect.

You could look it up.

People usually do not consider run-of-the-mill to be very flattering... Ben
