One can save $25 by not ordering the HK-195, but the question then is, 'can
one find better aftermarket speakers than the HK for less'?

The HK-195 speakers are just OK. If you are interested in good sound, I
suggest at least the Altec Lansing 495 speakers with sub-woofer. They sound
very good. I'm guess the 880 speakers are even better.

To directly answer your question, probably not anything I would like.

Bye.

I am thinking about the same thing, right now. There are advantages to
buying things integrated because of sound level controls and compatibility,
you don't want to have to turn up another brand, to max, just to hear it. I
would say, at $25 you can't go wrong, the question is, would one of the
better choices, that Dell offers, be worth it? Like I said, I'm thinking
about it.

For good aftermarket speakers, consider the Altec Lansing 45.1 with
Subwoofer. They're about $100. But for this, you can upgrade within
Dell. Also, the AL 48s are good--but about $150.

Hi,
My ladyfriend purchased an XPS 450 in December and made the no-speaker
choice. She also opted for the 320 V soundcard. For speakers she is using
Cambridge least expensive. PC works is what they are called, i believe. The
sound is incredible. Her stereo system sits idle-she listens to her music on
her computer.

I bought my XPR 450 three weeks ago and choose the Altek Lansing speaker system
and am very happy with it . Glad I paid the extra, they are worth it .

Not for $25.00. They don't have the range or bass of the subwoofer
models, but they are decent speakers for the price.

Well here's a strange occurence. Dell called me today and told me that I
*had* to buy speakers with my system because of the particular configuation
I ordered. HUH!?! The pull-down menu on the webpage had "no speakers" as an
option. Normally, I would be pissed at such coercion, but the price of my
system dropped by $3 with the addition of the speakers. IOW, I got the
speakers for free, plus an extra $3 off to boot.

Another thing I noticed is that the system I ordered on the morning of the
26th now costs over $125 more on Dell's webpage. I wonder if Dell checked
out all the competitor's webpages and then decided to jack the prices up?

This is what I bought:

Dimension XPS T500 MiniTower
128MB 100MHz SDRAM
QuietKey Keyboard
Trinitron P990 19" Monitor
12.9GB 7200RPM HD
16MB STB nVidia TNT 3D AGP Graphics Card
Logitech MouseMan Wheel
3Com/USRobotics V.90 Modem
4.8X DVD ROM with Software Decoding to be used w/16MB STB TNT Video
Turtle Beach Montego II A#D 320V
HK speakers
Office 97 Small Business Edition
3-Yr Limited Warranty, Premier 3-Yr Next Bus Day On-site Service.

My total price including shipping and tax for service is: $2,671.74

I was a little reluctant to buy a PIII on the first day of its release, but
it looks like it may have been a wise move. Since my P166 is unable to run
programs like Half-Life smoothly; I just could not stand having to wait
until the Fall for the 133Mhz bus; and since I have not found any PII 450's
significantly cheaper, going with a PIII 500 seemed like the logical choice.

Love to hear from the naysayers! Just remember, I've owned my Dell Dimension
P166 since Jan '95, so I'm not what you would call a habitual upgrader.
