I was wondering if any one has an opinion on AT&T Worldnet or Earthlink. I
am thinking about changing ISP's because I am having major problems with MSN
since April 99. Any opinions welcomed from people that have been members
TIA

I have tried AT&T and Earthlink both, here in Denver, Co. You will notice
my e-mail address :) I had major issues with AT&T here. Bad connects,
booted a lot, bumped after an hour or so and busy signals... all the things
I gave AOL up for! Earthlink has been stable and very reliable with very
few busy signals. I do from time to time have bad connects, but not often.
My kids computer connects at 50666 always and mine hooks up at 31200 <33.6
modem> always. The AT&T server near you may be better or worse and the
Earthlink server also could be better or worse. Just giving you what I have
experienced.

Hi Bryan:
I have been happy with WorldNet, but some friends of mine use Earthlink and
are also happy. both are good ISP's. Worldnet has been shaky in a couple
of areas because it is absorbing the former IBM network which it has bought.
On the other hand, Earthlink will merge with Mindspring early in the year
and that might cause some isolated problems as well.

Bryan, I have two e-mail accounts, one of which is Earthlink
(jon...@earthlink.net). I don't use it often, mostly as a fallback in case
my primary ISP is having problems (Compassnet, a local ISP in Houston). If
I were to have to RELY on Earthlink, though, I would have to say I would be
disappointed because it flips me off quite often, even just the few times I
find myself on there. So I'm not too impressed. Its cheap, though, and I
signed up basically to get the free digital camera (woo-hoo <gr>). NOTE
that if you have Triple-A you can get a discount with Earthlink.

I think you should try out some of your local ISPs and see how they work.
They are usually pretty competitive. I was lucky the first time out; you
may have to try one or two. Stay away from the dirt cheap ones, though.
You get what you pay for. I pay $20.11 for my Compassnet account and they
are ALWAYS on call via beeper with any problems or to "unlock" my mailbox
when some idiot sends me a dancing baby AVI that locks my mailbox up because
of its sheer size. But I have purchased some additional web space(beyond
the usual 3-5 MB that most ISPs give you), and have been very pleased.

Dropped ATT after two years of decent service. As you may or may no
know. They are is a major lawsuit over OPEN CABLE ACCESS in Portland
Oregon. Just as the lawsuit was starting. The two 56k lines dropped
back to 28.8. Over a week of nice and then nasty complaints led to
nothing.

Other than, It your fault. You have a bad line. (Same line). You have
bad modem and firmware.(Same) You have a problem we don't. I was a
daily visitor to the connectivity usenet group to ATT. They have major
problems. I personally think they dumping the dialup and pushing the
cable end.

Recommend Anything but ATT. Heard good thing about Earthlink but other
folks. Also check local ISP. Now with USWEST. Ok service on dial up. I
planning to move to DSL after first of year.

For what it's worth, I have been with Mindspring for a year now. There have been minor problems due to their expansion, but their telephone and email support have been excellent. I'm sure there will be glitches during the merging process, but I expect that the merged Mindspring/Earthlink support staff will be up to taking care of all customers.

I have been using Earthlink for 2 years now. The first year was
perfect, couldn't complain anything. However service and connection
started to deteriate since they merged with Sprint. They had recently
merged with Mindspring and now connection is terrible. I am a heavy
net user, connecting every evening (almost all evenings) and getting
4-5 times of line drops every night are normal behavior now.

I am actively looking for another ISP. I wouldn't recommend Earthlink
to anyone except those I hate.

Former Netcom user, when Midspring absorbed them service went to Heck
especially customer service. I abandoned mindless and went to Earthlink and
wouldn't you know it, they followed me! Well so far at least Earthink
service
is still good, and I get better customer service, hope it lasts.

I originally started with Sprint Internet Passport, which eventually became
EarthLink. So it's been about 3 years now. I can't say too many bad things
about them.

One thing that has not been mentioned here is customer service. They have
been great. I got one cranky guy at some point but that's expected. They
were very calm and curtious all other times. I live in Boston, so all I can
say is that they've been great here.

The Earthlink/Sprint merger also deteriorated our service. Slow responses
from the servers (about a 5 second delay from the click on a hyperlink to
response), and their customer service keeps blaming the phone lines.
Strange that before the merger we had no problems.

Usually your best bet is a local provider that has less hops, of course you
pay for the better connection.

I'll try to break a wide-known fact down which was briefly touched on
earlier in the post ...

First: AT&T has Merged with MediaOne Road Runner and @Home Cable Services,
and in some areas they have not merged yet, but soon will be ... AT&T
dropped a huge amount of 56k/v.90 capable lines in MANY areas...

Conclusion: AT&T merges/accquires biggest Cable Modem Service (CMS)
Providers (MediaOne Road Runner and @Home) ... end-conclusion folks, AT&T is
getting ready to go straight Cable access over the next following two years.
However there are talks of them forming a new ISP to keep those customers
who can't afford the cable prices ... but it's a "plan b" type thing ... so
the connection speeds won't be any concern of AT&T ...

Secondly: Earthlink ... as well MindSpring have purchased NUMEROUS amounts
of "small ISPs" ... and crammed the old customers of the former ISP onto
various other servers with Earthlink & Mindspring customers ... resulting in
a "big oohlah" of confusion & slow service. Common sense would have had
Earthlink & Mindspring keep the old customers on their old servers, and just
redirect the DNS entries, then upgrade the servers to Earthlink & Mindspring
standards etc., and please don't reply with "Thats too much work" ...
because Pacific Bell (Pacbell Internet Services - PBI) did the exact same
thing.

Conclusion: Earthlink & Mindspring have merged with numerous smaller
companies ... now are merging with/(have in some areas) each other ...
therefore you have a cornacopia of ISPs under one/two banners
(Earthlink/Mindspring) ... which is severe confusion.

Resolution to all: GET A JOB THAT ACTUALLY PAYS, GET A CABLE/DSL Connection,
and cruise the highway in complete fashion.

Sincerely,
Jeff Rambo
