I was roll'n on the floor laughing when I read this!!. If this is for real
I'm sorry... I gotta keyboard if you want to come pick it up.

Either way, sorry to laugh at your expense but your ingenuity for the space
bar work-around sure made my day.

Carla,

First we need to rule out that it really is the keyboard, which it most
likely is, based on the scenario you described. Get a keyboard from another
machine and plug it into the machine the bad keyboard was connected to. Then
try typing, trying to re-create the error.

If you can't recreate the error, then it's definetly the keyboard. If it's
still not under warranty, I wouldn't waste too much time trying to fix it,
because a new keyboard is only $10.00 to $20.OO.

This was a common problem with the Commercial systems era 1997 or 1998.
Compaq used what I believe they called a Erase-Ease keyboard. It was a
keyboard with the spacebar split into 2 halves. There were 3 modes for the
spacebar and it could be programmed via keystrokes or F10 setup. I cut the
following out of the MSG for the Deskpro 4000
(http://www5.compaq.com/support/techpubs/maintenance_guides/Deskpro_4000_600
0/Md4000c1.06.html)...

To program the Erase-Ease key for use in other modes, press and hold the
Alt+Ctrl+Shift keys on the left side of the keyboard. Then press the
left-half of the divided spacebar to cycle through the following modes:

Table 1-13. Erase-Ease Key Modes
=======================================
Mode Left-Half of Right-Half of
Divided Spacebar Divided Spacebar
=======================================
A (default) Backspace Forward space
B Forward space Backspace
C Forward space Forward space
=======================================

I haven't worked on COMPAQ hardware in a number of years so my memory is a
little clouded on this, but I do remember working some not so common issues
for my company where non Erase-Ease keyboards on Deskpro 4000 units would
backspace when depressing the spacebar. The resolution was to either to do
the 4 finger salute described above, go into F10 setup and set the keyboard
mode to forward/forward, go into F10 and use the RESET to default option,
clear CMOS or upgrade the System ROM.

Like I said, it has been 2 to 3 years since I worked on a similar problem
and even then it wasn't very common for non erase-ease keyboards. The order
of suggestion listed above is the order I would try, good luck.

Ciao for now...
Ron

F10 setup won't help on the Presario models. Use the Cntrl - Alt - Shift
keystrokes.....

I'm confused. All my Presarios (3) use F10.
