Indeed, and if I had $.02 then it would definitely go on his pile !!!
Unfortunately I do not find myself with either the time or the brain
capacity to work this stuff out for myself. This, however, should be of
enormous help to those (like myself) who have no clue what the hell they are
doing, and constantly whine (UNlike myself) about how big a pile of s**t
their Compaq is.
Nice job Robert. Thanks.

Robert, it is actually a great post, it does contain a very good piece of
information which is the password for the unzipped files, how you got this
password by the way ?
On the other hand you are wrong about the drivers section, there is no
drivers on the CD for the modem, and if there is, it is missing the setup or
the .inf file, theb directory you mentioned does not exist at all on my 4824
QR
thanks for the password anyway.

Robert, I did everything you wrote about transferring Windows 95b to a
folder on my hard drive. Everything works beautifully however, what is
different than the folder that already exists originally on the hard drive.
If I lose windows 95, how can I restore it if I can't get into Windows?

I'm wondering, if I copied all of the files located on QR\etc. etc. to a zip
drive, could I install Windows 95b onto a clean hard drive. Also if I
wanted to reinstall Windows 95b over a corrupted existing Windows 95b could
I do this using a zip drive that has all the the copied files on it?

I am impressed with your knowledge. Hopefully you don't mind it I pick your
brain for this additional information.

Thank you
Allan Marques

The password's common knowledge, it's on a few of the information sites on the
web (not Compaq's own ones).
The drivers do vary from computer to computer, I should have made this clearer.

Here's a question...

Using the procedure below it is possible to do a reinstall of the
operating system without having to run the quick restore program. For
me, this is prefferable because doing so allows Win95 to be installed
without having Internet Explorer 4 integrated into it, which has
caused me nothing but trouble.

However, during the install process there is never an opportunity to
enter the OEM product number into the system setup, so when it's
finished, the ID number in system properties is simply a bunch of X's.

Is there a way to enter the actual number back into the system?

Sure thing
hit START
then RUN
type : regedit
in registry editor - choose edit
next = find
type in eaxactly what appears in place of your OEM #
once found - just click on the number & u get option to change to antyhing
;-)
