I have a 5020 Presario. The built-in mic doesn't work. I hooked up a new
one and it doesn't either. The recording program provided by windows
doesn't show any activity when I try it. I've checked all the settings and
downloaded the most recent drivers from Compaq. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Hi:
I have the e700 and I had the same problem. Double click on the speaker and go
into properties. Go into recording and uncheck everything except the mic click
ok. the mic should show up and click select on the panel. That should do it.
