Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade the processor on the Presario
CDS 524 (the all-in-one - monitor attached to box computer)? Its currently
a 486DX2-66, and I want to put in a 486DX4-100 or low grade Pentium.

Thanks for your help

Piyush.

The processor in the CDS 500 series can be upgraded. An Intel 486dx4 100Mhz
Overdrive processor will work fine, but they are no longer in production and
are very hard to find. Do NOT use a non-overdrive processor as there is
voltage incompatibility and it will damage both the processor and motherboard
It is not possible to upgrade with a Pentium processor.
The best processor upgrade you can make is with the Evergreen 586/133Mhz. This
processor is Pentium class and far superior to the Intel 486dx4 100Mhz Overdrive
processor. It has the added advantage of still being in production and easy to
get. You can find out all about it at: www.evertech.com

Kingston Technology (www.kingston.com) also produces a 5x86/133mhz
Turbo Chip. Both the Kingston and the Evergreen are good alternatives
to boosting performance over the cost of an Intel chip. The Kingston
and the Evergreen costs now between $80 to $90. I used the Kingston on
my Presario 633 and it made a world of difference especially with
running Windows 95. One word of caution... these chips are not
compatible with all computers. I know Kingston has a list on their web
site of incompatible computers or contact their tech support at:
sup...@kingston.com with any questions you have. I found their
support most helpful in determining compatibility and with the
motherboard jumper settings.

The Compaq Presario 500 series is listed as incompatible with the Kingston Technology
Turbo Chip on their website. As both the Evergreen and Kingston upgrades are built
around the AMD 5*86/133 Mhz processor, I do not know why the Kingston upgrade should
be incompatible while the Evergreen is, but there you have it, the Evergreen works with
CDS 500's, so why take the risk with a Kingston.

Thank you John, I had the same question...
Hope it applies to a CDS 860 too.

Greetings, Jens

I'm not sure it does. There might be different BIOS acces software for that model.
I'll see what I can find out.

Yes, the same BIOS access software is used on both the 500 series and 800 series. You can
download the necessary software at the Compaq site. The files you want are SP1363 and
SP2373.
