Hi everybody!

I had to change my SMTP server and now I need to authenticate...

I'm pretty sure I've read, a long time ago!!, something about this but with
google I've only found the online Thor's FAQ on Thule's web...

Do I have to change the SMTP server? :-))

Ciao, Giangi (hoping that anybody is listening...)

Well, I'm listening - I just wish I knew how to help.

This is all I could find in the Thor FAQ, but you probably know it all
ready.

Cheers.

2.7 Collecting mail with SMTPd instead of POP3.

Some Internet providers do not provide POP3 mail. Mail needs to me
collected using a SMTP deamon in these cases, and the "Get Mail"
function in ConnectTHOR can not be used. However, THOR will read
mailboxes created by any SMTPd just fine if you follow these steps:

- Set the download directory in Global Config->Paths to the directory
where incoming mail is stored.

- Set the Mailpacket name in Systems Config to the name of the mailbox
that is created by SMTPd and save.

THOR will now automatically import these mailboxes into its database
when you enter the system configured for Internet.

Installation of the SMTP deamon is beyond the scope of this FAQ, see
the supplied documentation for the SMTPd in question for how to do
this. INetUtils on Aminet includes a SMTPd that will work fine.

All the best,
Angus Manwaring. (for e-mail remove ANTISPEM)

Dear Angus Manwaring,

let me quote your message dated 20-Lug-08 12:24:20, where you wrote to All

Unfortunately this is not what I was looking for... I do not have "problems"
collecting mail... :-)

Ciao, Giangi

Okay, sorry. I found some bits of text with google that may be useful, one
is from some 4 years ago. The guy suggests that Thor may not support some
SMTP authentication protocols. :(

Good call. Thanks for the response.

Mail is mail. THOR doesn't care about the physical layer used by TCP/IP,
you could be using carrier pigeons for all it cares.

What happens when you try to collect mail? Is anything written to the
ErrorLog? What happens when you use GetTCP from a shell? This should
give more information. When news works and mail doesn't, it's usually
an authentication problem, which is more likely to be because your cable
ISP does things slightly differently rather than the use of cable
itself.

No.

I will repeat, hoping that the Thor Guys are listening, my suggestion to solve
this problem:

Make ConnectThor open source.

That way the part of Thor that needs changing can be changed, and the Thor Guys
can sell updates to Thor as new hardware becomes available.

You do know that Hyperion has announced an OS4.1 update?

Even if I could dig out the sources (I do have the cvs repository
somewhere), open sourcing it probably won't happen, at least not the full
source code.

Tbh, I haven't touched the source code in over 10 years :-|

Currently, I have more than enough with my current daytime job making the
best Web browser in the world, and likewise the other guys are probably
busy too.

(The web browser is Opera of course :)

Just ConnectThor. The rest still works fine.

With such good people working for Opera, it should be.
