Dozens of tornadoes rip through Houston with winds of up 100mph -
razing buildings to the ground including an animal shelter and
scattering debris fields miles wide

. . .

So, it really WAS raining cats and dogs .........

In any case, this was a severe tornado event. Most times
we hear of just ONE ... but in this case there seems to
have been "dozens" (the weather service will add it up).
Such multi-twister events are rare ... and then mostly
in the spring and fall - not mid-January.

The odd storm pattern that has brought waves of flooding
rain to California the past couple of weeks is the likely
culprit. Weather is coming in from the Pacific instead
of the arctic. The air is warmer and wetter, increasing
the yield when it intersects the flow up from the Gulf.
