Currently, our office is looking at purchasing a new total station. We have
narrowed the choice down to a Sokkia or a Topcon.

I would like some feedback of the pro's and con's of these two instruments.

Especially regarding wet weather conditions, vertical errors, and overall
durability.

Made a decision yet? There have been some good replies on this thread, it
would be helpful to know your requirements (angular precision, max distance
you need to shoot to a single prism) to compare the two brands model for
model.

For instance, as far as wet weather conditions are concerned Topcon's 211
(5"), 212 (6") and 213 (10") offer IPX-6 protection (ie driven rain) where
Sokkia's Set 5W offers IPX-7 (instrument can be sub-merged under water).

You can find Sokkia specs at our website:

www.intecamericas.com

We also offer used surveying equipment which is kept up-to-date on our
website, current options include (all prices in $ USD):

TOTAL STATIONS
Topcon GTS 3C, 5" / 1,800 meters, $5,495

Sokkia Set 4BII Used Total Station, 5" / 1,500 meters, $5,655

Sokkia / Lietz Set 3, 3" / 2000 meters, $5,295
3" precision and a powerful EDM, all at an easy price.

SEMI-TOTAL STATIONS
Lietz SDM-3FR-06 Used Semi-Total Station, 6" / 1,400 meters, $3,395
Automatic reduction.

Lietz SDM-3E-10 Used Semi-Total Station, 10" / 1,400 meters, $2,995

DATA COLLECTORs
Sokkia SDR 33 2MB, $2,200

Regards and best of luck with your total station search --

This is in response to your post on the
newsgroup alt.surveyor I see that you are
considering buying a new total station......I
am a surveyor in Oregon and I currently use a
Sokkia Set 2B.. I have used this same
instrument for about the past 6 years... We
have subjected this instrument to just about
all adverse weather conditions and I must say
that it has not performed well under any of
them....I get errant distances when the
ni-cad batteries get low....a common distance
is 17.62'......I have also gotten distances
on the other end of the spectrum which have
5 digits....Also, when the battery is low,
on occasion the Set 2B will return the same
slope distance several times in a
row......not good!!!makes it appear that you
are getting a good shot when you
aren't........also the weatherization doesn't
seem to be adequate...The gun gets water
logged from time to time....As for the
ability of the gun to turn angles.....I am
not impressed with this aspect either....IF
you can keep the gun in adjustment it does a
great job......keeping it in adjustment is
the problem.....It seems that this transit is
only accurate for the weather conditions that
it is adjusted in.....as slight as a 10
degree temperature swing can send it out of
tolerances.....so from morning to
afternoon.......is almost impossible to get
the gun to turn good angles....The vertical
angles are almost impossible to keep in
adjustment.....Also when you rotate the
eyepiece to a steeper angle....the horizontal
angle changes with it.....SIGNIFICANTLY....so
if you are working in steep ground.....if
your backsight is above you and the foresight
is below you then you have the worst of all
circumstances.....looking up the horizontal
will change ...for example ...to a greater
horizontal and then when you sight the
foresight the horizontal will be less......you
can literally see the horizontal angle change
as you rotate the vertical higher or
lower....unbelievable...I have complained of
this to my employer and to the sokkia
people.....they have checked the gun out and
told me that it is within tolerances ....I
say bullshit! ...anyway I would buy something
other than Sokkia if I were you....I am not a
supervisor by the way...I am a crew chief and
use this total station everyday.
