You must not be a surveyor.

There isn't so much activity on the "real" ng that it would require a
split.

In view of this, I think his question is valid. I have been posting to this
group myself, but I am not sure why.
The only reason I can think of is that I am an "alternate" surveyor,
relying on my own abilities and reputation to make a living rather than
being certified by a professional group or Government regulations. I don't
find this to be restrictive, I always tell prospective clients that I have
no license or insurance, and I refer those clients who need work done on
the "other side of the line" to a legal surveyor. I have even been accepted
as an expert witness in a courtroom based on my reputation for honesty and
accuracy, rather than certification by an outside body.
I must say that I have never been flamed by the legal surveyors in
sci.engr.surveying just because I am not a registered land surveyor. The
discussions are interesting and informative, and there seems to be no
distinction between registered and non registered surveyors.
So, do we really need this group?

I really don't know . I am not a surveyor. I just detected perhaps a bit of
territorial competitiveness in the question and thought I would poke at the
provocative question a little.
I found the same questions about alt.hobbies.beekeepking a short time ago. Some
one who uses sci.agriculture.beekeeping was all out of sorts about it. The
territorial competitiveness is somewhat of mystery to me. Can the big eight
newsgroups be that weak?
Guess that makes me a troller for this thread. I promise I won't continue.
It's just a slow Sunday day. The kind you love to have once in awhile

Why Not?

One possible reason is that some people are barred by their employers from
accessing newsgroups under alt.*, because of the (false) perception that
everything under alt is at best frivolous.
It would be unfortunate if the answer to someone's question were only
available under alt.surveyor and not also posted to sci.engr.surveying. An
ancient thread back in comp.cad.autocad discussed getting rid of alt.cad.*
for just that reason.

Maynard to Eugene: whatever would give you that false impression?
I note that the original question has yet to be answered.
