We had become entirely too glib about our liberties,
until we were driven to our knees, not to pray for having
been led astray, but simply to beg on broken legs.
The Explosion needed no Explanation. The town had
no adequate avenues of evacuation, although we now, belatedly,
have some plans under evaluation.
It is my recollection that the deadly chain reaction had started
with an ordinary doughnut distraction. Please don't laugh, but the
entire tragedy appeared to be triggered precisely when the
Dunkirk Doughnut was broken in half. I don't believe that this
part of the plan had been approved by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The mayhem commenced at exactly 9:12am.
I was having coffee in the cafe, when Father Roach came
scurrying. The Right Reverend Roach approached, and I
imagined for a moment that our sins, he was going
to reproach. In the town, he was very well-known, and he
began to speak in earnest tones.
"Hell's fury was never greater", he said, "than
the frightening fires coming forth from the
Freedom Fries French Freighter!"
"By the city's port, something important is happening!
Perhaps the Judgment has come, from Heaven's High Court,
or perhaps they torment us, simply for the sport!
The whole situation is entirely dire, and the sky is filled
with a pretty orange fire! There is fire by the docks!
Somebody please call a doctor!"
The races changed places.
During this disaster, black people put on faces of white plaster.
Caucasians, on this particular occasion, representing the town's
uppermost classes, had their faces covered with oil and molasses.
For this reason, their hospitals ran out of hospitality.
They discovered hostile hospitals, spitting on them all, because,
for their ethnicity, they had no certificates of authenticity.
"Why does Heaven show us this scorn?", they wailed.
Is it because of our myopia in believing that we could make
a Utopia with our genetically modified Cornucopia?
Is it because of the corruptions of our corporations?
Is the cover-ups by the coroners, or the politically
incorrect coronations of crooks and their cronies whose
phony crusades completely fail to persuade us?
Is it the cretins with credit cards who display no doubts
as they descend into debts?
Is it because we were much too tolerant? Or because of our
democratically elected tyrants, that the water now fails to flow
from our fire hydrants? Is it because of the many justice
miscarriages, or because of minorities whose marriages we
disparaged? For the elections that we stole, or the second gunman
on the grassy knoll? Because, even though much better we knew,
we admitted nothing to be askew, and only glanced askance at the
suspicious circumstances, with no questions asked about the
accusations of all the alarming political assassinations?"
A Voice from Above said "Yes, to all of the above.
Except for the part about being too tolerant. Mostly,
you were too flagrantly ignorant and self-important"
That was the voice of grandpa, on the PA system of the
S.S. Grandcamp, enjoying his moment of glory, finally
with a captive audience to listen to his war stories.
What might they expect, next? This entire part of Texas
had been hexed by secular, homelandsexual security experts!
In the dry heat of the Texas desert, we were desiccated
but we decided that it was time that we desegregated.
To those who were lost, we dedicated a dessert,
richly deserved, of our Marlene Dietrich doughnuts,
dipped in a burnt orange Boston creme frosting

When someone in Texas City mentions "The Explosion," no
explanation is necessary
'Texas City just blew up'
Texas City was nothing less than a boomtown, a place the
hometown newspaper declared with every edition to be "the port
of opportunity - the heart of the greatest industrial
development of the South."
If anyone complained about the smell, they were told it was the
smell of money and that they'd soon grow accustomed to it.
No one in town had seen one quite like it. It was the color of
the smoke that caught their eyes. Some called it a peach color,
some called it reddish orange. Many said it was pretty.
The fire was coming from the Grandcamp.
While his colleagues milled around nearby warehouses to watch
the fire, Johnson decided to get a cup of coffee. As he walked
to a nearby cafe, he passed Father William Roach, a well-known
Catholic priest in town, and Mike Mikeska, the head of the Texas
City Terminal Railway Co., which operated the port. The two men
were speaking in earnest tones about towing the burning ship
away from the docks if the fire grew worse.
It seemed to Mary Hunter, a secretary to the head engineer at
Monsanto, that the smoke billowing into the air was keeping
everyone from settling down to work. Someone had brought
doughnuts to the office, as a further distraction. Hunter, who
had skipped breakfast, told a co-worker they should share a
doughnut, and as she broke one in half, it happened. The fire on
the ship, which had sent such pretty smoke into the sky moments
before, exploded at 9:12 a.m.
Johnson, with only rags left on him, thought it was the end of
the world. He thought about Bible scripture that said what once
was destroyed by water would now be destroyed by fire.
Monsanto, Mary Hunter was thrown behind a desk. From the ground
floor of the three-story building, she could look up and see sky
each time she awoke from unconsciousness.
"Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art
thou . . ." she said aloud each time she awoke.
"Something terrible's happened. All the windows blew out in the
bank," one of them said. Within 45 minutes, people covered in
oil and molasses began staggering into the hospital
It was Mary Hunter, the Monsanto secretary, a close friend he
and his wife had socialized with practically every weekend. But
he didn't recognize her. Her face was a white mask, a result of
asbestos and plaster that had dropped from the ceiling and
coated her when the building at the plant collapsed. The red
streaks that soaked through the ghostly mask were small rivulets
of blood.
From four miles away, the first flash of light from the
explosion made Ken DeMaet and a co-worker, Red Murff, look up
from their work at Carbide.
The two men stood in awe as the dirty orange cloud that rose
into the sky took the shape of a mushroom, by then a well-
recognized shape of the Nuclear Age.
"Red, we're at war. The Russians have dropped a damn A-bomb on
us," DeMaet, 21, told his friend.
Yeah, I guess we are," answered Murff.
The first concussion wave that hit them broke windows, knocked
barrels over and seemed to ripple the ground.
The explosion had been heard as far as 150 miles away. The
mushroom cloud rose 2,000 feet.
Hundreds were killed instantly: the curious bystanders, the ship'
s crew, the town's entire volunteer firefighter corps, save for
one volunteer who was making deliveries on his beer route near
Kemah.
Pieces of the sisal twine aboard the ship were shot into the air,
only to float gently back to the ground, the coils resembling
blazing worms as they twisted back to earth.
Hernandez couldn't tell white people from black people. Everyone
seemed to be covered in oil or molasses, or both.
"The world is coming to an end!" a woman wailed.
That notion occurred to more than one person in Texas City.
"Judgment Day! It's Judgment Day," screamed some of the children.
The Grandcamp explosion had blown the hatches off the High Flyer,
but no fire aboard the vessel had been detected. The only damage
appeared to be a hole in the deck the size of a dinner plate.
"The sky is filled with red! We are all hitting the deck!"
reported Ben Kaplan of KTHT radio in Houston
McGar Motor Service, a garage, had been turned into a temporary
morgue to keep the first bodies recovered.
At the funeral home where her brother's service was held, a
mortician from Chicago who prepared the body warned the family
that the Texas City disaster was a warning from the Almighty.
"The Lord has sent a message to you to change your way of living,"
he solemnly told McGrory and her family.
The mortician's admonition had the ring of truth to McGrory.
Indeed, five days after the Grandcamp explosion, Texas City
still looked like an earthly vision of hell itself as fires
continued to burn, filling the sky with black smoke.
Then, six weeks after the explosion, they noticed a description
in the newspaper of an unidentified man who had been carrying a
silver pocket watch and fob on his work pants.
"I have a feeling about this," Cariebelle said.
"I do too," answered her daughter.
Together, the women carried a belt buckle that complemented the
pocket watch and fob that belonged to the patriarch of their
family.
It was a match.
Then they checked a piece of the khaki pants the unidentified
man had been wearing. The night before the explosion, Cariebelle
had mended the fly on her husband's work pants, using pink
thread because she couldn't find tan thread.
She found the pink thread on a small piece of the body's khaki
pants, further verifying the identity of her 56-year-old husband.

First, Ghengis. You need remedial education. I am a corporation.
A subchapter "S" corporation to be precise. I have the papers to
prove it, as they say. I am not a kingdom. I get no welfare from
taxpayers.
Corporations pay no taxes, never have. Corporations pass on the
things our lawmakers call "corporate taxes" (because it's easier
to tax big, bad "corporations than it is to tax people) to the
people who purchase their goods or services. Or they pass them
on through reduced profits (and attendant reductions in
corporate value) to their owners, those pesky people I talked
about earlier.
Second,
OhMy I refuse you request as stupid not to mention impossible.
The owners of Monsanto, the Monsanto shareholders (people),
change daily as people buy and sell securities. Call Monsanto
and ask for a list of their shareholders. When they're done
laughing, if they give you a list, you do the work and research
if you're really interested, which we all know you're not. You
just like to make idiotic posts, demonstrating lack on much
knowlesge in the subjects you post to.

which was suspended a circular member which was one of the poles.
There was also, under the floor but out of sight, the other half
of the doughnut which was supporting a similar circular member
which was the other pole. The two poles were facing each other
and separated by about two feet. They were both 37 inches in
diameter.
Figure 2 is a picture of a the a 27-inch magnet. The upper part
of the arch [yoke] can be seen as well as one of the pole pieces.
It was one of several magnets used by Dr. Lawrence in his early
cyclotron work. This 27-inch magnet had been converted, during
the 1930s, to the 37-inch magnet which I first saw in the 37-

Only the poles were different is diameter.

Who is Jose Padilla? Does he possess the intellectual
sophistication and the organizational skills to gather a half
dozen capable thieves, including at least one person with enough
knowledge in nuclear engineering, to successfully obtain enough
radioactive material, fuse it with explosives, and detonate a
dirty bomb?
Born October 18, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York, Padilla moved with
his family to Chicago when he was four. His childhood nickname
was Pucho--Spanish for "Pudgy." He enjoyed playing basketball
and spent time studying, according to those who lived in his
Logan Square neighborhood. But starting in the mid-1980s,
Padilla built up a substantial police record and associated
himself with the Latin Disciples street gang. In 1985, when he
was 15, he was charged as a juvenile in connection with a murder.
Padilla and a friend were convicted of robbing and stabbing a
drunken man. Padilla kicked the unconscious, bleeding man in the
head while he lay on the street, later telling police he did it
because he "felt like it." Confined to an Illinois juvenile
detention facility, he was released at 18 and started a string
of menial jobs, all the while using a variety of aliases,
including Hernandez and Rivera. [1]
In 1989, while working as a $420-a-month dishwasher, Padilla
reportedly punched a police officer in a dispute over a doughnut.

In the last analysis, Echelon, as far as we know, is not much
different, except in terms of quantity, from any other research
engine, like Yahoo or AltaVista, which scan hundreds of
thousands, even millions of documents in search of certain key
words. It should not be hard to trick it. A true terrorist would
hardly write or utter the word "bomb," or its equivalent in one
of the innumerable languages and dialects existing in the world,
so that Echelon, if it should use the Italian word for bomb,
"bomba," as a key word, might be put off course by innocent
references to a sort of breakfast doughnut. The fact is that the
U.S., as far as one knows, has invested much more in late years
in technical devices and systems than in the intelligence needed
to use the stuff and interpret the resulting information.
"Intelligence" is an empty term unless it is the abstract
substantive for "intelligere".

We also now know that there is a strong genetic component to

Bill Minutaglio learned his craft at the Dallas Morning News,
the state's utterly conventional "newspaper of record," then
wrote a preelection biography of George W. Bush. "City on Fire"
is anything but conventional. It is a remarkable re-creation of
an event in which the writer risks losing control of his
narrative by dividing it among a dozen characters. Yet he
succeeds and provides the reader with perspective from every
corner of a town balkanized by race, ethnicity, religion and class.
Yet strings of boxcars filled with fertilizer were rolling into
Texas City from weapons plants in the Midwest -- with no labels
warning of its explosive potential. What happened in Texas City
was predictable and preventable.
The government's response was equally predictable. When the town
exploded in 1947, America faced an unknown enemy and was so
preoccupied with terrorism that its citizens were willing to
exchange their personal liberties for personal security. So FBI
agents rounded up the usual suspects -- Mexican Americans and
trade unionists -- while the parties responsible for the
explosion remained unscathed in the Department of the Army and
the White House
The story of Texas City is the story of the Cold War, of greed,
lust, environmental degradation, racism and the unbridled power
of corporations. But this book is not simply a history of past
events. It's a warning about the world in which we live, about
politicians who serve the interests of the corporations rather
than their constituencies. But it is also a story about decency
and compassion and spiritual resolve and courage."

Disaster struck Texas City in 1947
Freeport is about 60 miles south of Houston, but only a few
miles from Texas City, where one of the worst disasters in the
history of the United States took place April 16, 1947, when the
French ship SS Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate, exploded at
the docks.
One law enforcement source said the signs point to this incident
being a "terrorist reconnaissance operation."
"There are no signs of any explosives," he said. "There are no
signs of any renegade ships in the area. But there is a strong
likelihood this shooter and any companions that may have been
with him were scoping out a possible target for terrorism."

Wild Atom was meant to expose weaknesses in national defense
against terrorism and in the end it drew a frightening
conclusion - especially for anyone living near a seaport.
The game was played out in 1998 at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies, a Washington, D.C. think tank. Among the
66 participants was James Schlesinger, who served as the U.S.
secretary of defense, secretary of energy and as director of the
CIA.
Security Gaps
There is a point between Galveston Island and the Bolivar
Peninsula that is one of the busiest marine intersections in the
country. The Houston, Texas City and Galveston ship channels
meet the Intercoastal Waterway at that spot. More than 175
million tons of cargo passed through it last year.
"You can't imagine how relatively easy it is to pack a container
and ship something undetected," said Lambright. 'Security has
not been the priority of people in the supply chain. Just
because we're starting to talk about it doesn't mean the problem's
solved."

But what could such attacks really accomplish? Could they really
be as dramatic and devastating as the Sept. 11 attacks?
One scenario that sends shivers down the spines of homeland
security officials is what happened in Texas City, April 16,
1947. In one of the worst disasters in the history of Texas,
the ship SS Grandcamp exploded at 9:12 a.m. at the docks in
Texas City. The French-owned vessel, carrying explosive ammonium
nitrate produced during wartime for explosives and later
recycled as fertilizer, caught fire early in the morning, and
while attempts were being made to extinguish the fire, the ship
exploded.
But keep in mind ? this was an accident.
What would be the potential damage in a deliberate attack with a
ship laden with chemicals, explosives ? even, perhaps, a nuclear
weapon?
That's the nightmare consideration for some officials as al-
Qaida continues to hide from international authorities 15 ships
it has purchased.
G2 Bulletin sources say there are reports al-Qaida and other
terrorist organizations have been practicing high-seas terror
attacks by hijacking ships, kidnapping crews and studying diving ?
much as the Sept. 11 skyjackers learned to fly airliners. If a
maritime terror attack comes, it won't be the first. In October
2000, the USS Cole, a heavily armed ship protected with the
latest radar defenses, was hit by an al-Qaida suicide crew.
Seventeen American soldiers died. Two years later, following the
attacks on the Twin Towers, a similar attack was carried out
against a French supertanker off the coast of Yemen.

This mysterious ship or submarine disappeared and was not seen
again. At the time the ship was hit it did not explode but
rather just seemed to burst in two, which leads the Captain to
believe that they have a new type torpedo made of gas that when
it strikes it bursts like compressed air breaking the ship apart.
As this ship has a cargo of steel, explosives and machinery it
is possible the Captain is right as there was no fire in the
ship or smoke.
The Captain stated that all hands in the engine room were lost
as was the Lt. of the Navy Gun Crew whose office adjoined
Joseph's. The last seen of the Lt. of the Navy Gun Crew was
that he and two others were on a doughnut raft and nothing had
been seen of them since according to the Captain. Of a crew of 62
men, only 31 were saved. While the Captain was on the raft he
and the others heard some of the others hollering "over here
fellows" which makes him believe that they either were in a boat
or near the mysterious ship. After being on the raft 17 hours,
they were picked up by a new destroyer and taken to Norfolk Navy
Yard, Norfolk, VA.
If Joe and the rest were not picked up by the mysterious ship,
or some other ship plying that lane which would mean a ship
going to Russia, the Captain believes that Joe and the rest were
either sucked in by the ship or hit with the timber that was
swirling around in the vicinity of where the ship went down

On September 15, 2003, at approximately 0015 hours I was
northbound in the Victoria Barge Canal approaching the Fordyce
docks in Victoria, Texas, when the M/V HOWARD STAPP, JR. lost
all steering power. Deckhand Burnett Perryman was onboard, and
on watch at the time with me. I informed Mr. Perryman that I had
lost steering and sent him to investigate. Mr. Perryman informed
me that when the steering hydraulic system ran low on fluid the
vessel would loose steering. Mr. Perryman then put 15 gallons of
hydraulic fluid into the hydraulic tank as it was empty. This
did not solve the problem, and upon further investigation, he
discovered that the hydraulic steering hose on the stern of the
vessel had become crimped and burst, thus dumping approximately
25 gallons of hydraulic fluid on the deck of the vessel. I then
told Mr. Perryman to wake Captain Doug Gay and inform him of the
situation. Captain Gay and Mr. Perryman replaced the busted hose
and I regained steering on the vessel. I asked Mr. Perryman if
he had cleaned up the hydraulic fluid that was all over the deck
and he informed me that Captain Gay told him to wait till after
daylight and they would clean it up. At this writing, I do not
know how they cleaned it or if any hydraulic fluid got into the
waterway.
Ammonium Nitrate: TSAC was invited to discuss adding Ammonium
Nitrate to the list of Certain Dangerous Cargoes (CDC). Ammonium
nitrate is a fertilizer that, under certain circumstances, can
detonate on its own. The 1947 explosion of the freighter
GRANDCAMP that leveled Texas City, TX, is a prime example. There
are already interim regulations in place that govern the
movement of CDCs in the Eighth District .(1) [(1) Refer to GCMA
Report #R-367 for full details.]
Mariner Deaths During Nighttime Fleeting Operations: LT(jg)
Brandy Parker of MSU Baton Rouge reported a number of incidents
where crewmembers and other workers fell overboard from barges
at night where poor lighting may have been a contributing factor.
The accidents also emphasized the "danger area" in front of
barge rakes and an increased need for safety during barge
operations. We gave LT Parker a copy of GCMA Report #R-375 and
suggested that fatigue may also be related to the falls
overboard. Captain David Whitehurst and I met with LT Parker a
year ago while she was the acting Executive Officer of MSU Baton
Rouge on other matters. At that time we noted that she displayed
a real concern for mariner problems as is further evidenced by
her report to TSAC. We wish LT Parker the very best of luck in
law school following her tour of duty in Baton Rouge.

The morning of 16 April 1947 dawned clear and crisp, cooled by a
brisk north wind. Just before 8:00 A.M., longshoremen removed
the hatch covers on Hold 4 of the French Liberty ship Grandcamp
as they prepared to load the remainder of a consignment of
ammonium nitrate fertilizer. Some 2,300 tons were already
onboard, 880 of which were in the lower part of Hold 4. The
remainder of the ship's cargo consisted of large balls of sisal
twine, peanuts, drilling equipment, tobacco, cotton, and a few
cases of small ammunition. No special safety precautions were in
focus at the time.
Several longshoremen descended into the hold and waited for the
first pallets holding the 100-pound packages to be hoisted from
dockside. Soon thereafter, someone smelled smoke. A plume was
observed rising between the cargo holds and the ships hull,
apparently about seven or eight layers of sacks down. Neither a
gallon jug of drinking water nor the contents of two fire
extinguishers supplied by crew members seemed to do much good.
As the fire continued to grow, someone lowered a fire hose, but
the water was not turned on. Since the area was filling fast
with smoke, the longshoremen were ordered out of the hold.
It was now about 8:30. At this point, growing pressure from the
compressed steam fed into Hold 4 blew off the hatch covers, and
a thick column of orange smoke billowed into the morning sky.
Attracted by its unusual color and the sirens, several hundred
onlookers began gathering a few hundred feet away at the head of
the ship. Twenty-six men and the four trucks of the Volunteer
Fire Department, followed by the Republic Oil Refining Company
fire-fighting team, arrived on the scene and set up their hoses.
A photograph taken at approximately 8:45 shows at least one
stream playing on the deck of the Grandcamp, which was
apparently hot enough to vaporize the water.
Around 9:00, flames erupted from the open hatch, with smoke
variously described as "a pretty gold, yellow color" or as
"orange smoke in the morning sunlight...beautiful to see."
Twelve minutes later, the Grandcamp disintegrated in a
prodigious explosion heard as far as 150 miles distant. A huge
mushroom like cloud billowed more than 2,ooo feet into the
morning air, the shockwave knocking two light planes flying
overhead out of the sky. A thick curtain of steel shards scythed
through workers along the docks and a crowd of curious onlookers
who had gathered at the head of the slip at which the ship was
moored. Blast over pressure and heat disintegrated the bodies of
the firefighters and ship's crew still on board. At the Monsanto
plant, located across the slip, 145 of 450 shift workers
perished. A fifteen-foot wave of water thrust from the slip by
the force of the blast swept a large steel barge ashore and
carried dead and injured persons back into the turning basin as
it receded. Fragments of the Grandcamp, some weighing several
tons, showered down throughout the port and town for several
minutes, extending the range of casualties and property damage
well into the business district, about a mile away. Falling
shrapnel bombarded buildings and oil storage tanks at nearby
refineries, ripping open pipes and tanks of flammable liquids
and starting numerous fires. After the shrapnel, flaming balls
of sisal and cotton from the ships cargo fell out of the sky,
adding to the growing conflagration.
The horror was not over yet. As help poured into Texas City, no
one gave much thought to another Liberty ship tied up in the
adjoining slip. The High Flyer was loaded with sulfur as well as
a thousand tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.
By 1:00 A.M. on 17th April, flames were shooting out of the hold.
The tugs retrieved the boarders, severed tow lines, and moved
quickly out of the slip. Ten minutes later, the High Flyer
exploded in a blast witnesses thought even more powerful than
that of the Grandcamp.
Although casualties were light because rescue personnel had
evacuated the dock area, the blast compounded already severe
property damage. In what witnesses described as something
resembling a fireworks display, incandescent chunks of steel
which had been the ship arched high into the night sky and fell
over a wide radius, starting numerous fires. Crude oil tanks
burst into flames, and a chain reaction spread fires to other
structures previously spared damage. When dawn arrived, large
columns of thick, black smoke were visible thirty miles away.
The burial service for the unidentified dead was held Sunday
morning, June 22, 1947 at 10:00 A.M. Despite the fact that there
was very little advance publicity, cars were park a mile and a
half up and down the highway, and the crowd was estimated at 5,
ooo. The sixty-three caskets were brought from Camp Wallace by
separate hearses from fifty-one participating funeral homes in
twenty-eight cities. It was a striking procession, probably the
longest in the history of funeral services. Each casket was
carried by pallbearers from the American Legion, V.F.W., Labor
Organizations and Volunteer Firemen. Each was decorated with a
spray of flowers, gifts of the Florist Association.
The Memorial Cemetery in Texas City is located on the northern
edge of town, where Loop 197 joins Twenty-Ninth Street. It still
resembles the 1947 landscape design by Houston artist Herbert
Skogland but is not identical to it. Before the 1991 enlargement
it was a grassy plot, roughly two acres in size and surrounded
by a stone wall. It was presided over by an angel of Italian
marble. The stone pillars on either side of a wrought iron gate
were simply inscribed "Memorial Cemetery Texas City 1947."
Inside remains a rectangular grassy lot with a oval pathway
inside. In the pool, in a small concrete circle, stands the
marble angel, her eyes downcast and her fingers perpetually
strewing a marble flower
In the years between 1947 and 1991 when the cemetery was
enlarged and refurbished as a WAR AND PEACE MEMORIAL, many of
the small markers were lost, moved, or buried in the thatch
grass. When the cemetery was enlarged, the remaining markers
were relocated within a brick wall. Thus, it is that now the
remains are truly anonymous, known only to God.

WE WERE THERE
Texas City by the Bay. April '47, 16th day.
We all recall that fateful day.
Time froze for seconds, as did our hearts;
when two mighty blasts wrest our lives apart.
Fifty years ago, today?and remembered yet.
We were there. We won't forget.
An April day with skies of blue and
Cool crisp air that shed no clue
of war-like horrors on their way
that lovely sunshine cloudless day,
But for some who sensed the coming scene
and one who viewed it in his dream.
Smoke and fire that early morning?
coming cataclysm, without warning,
Except for the flames that blazed sun-bright
within the Grand Camp in pretty hues of light
red, orange, yellow, pink, and green so clear
that hundreds of spectators rushed near
To watch in awe while overhead two doomed planes
Circled above those deceptive flames.
Below, men toiled both on ship and land;
Both the great and small - all lent a hand.
To quench the French ship's rumbling beast
aroar in her hold with Hell-fire's heat.
Twenty-seven brave firemen we loved or knew
Rushed down to her to see what they could do.
But Fate felled them in a deafening drone.
One blinding flash, six hundred souls were gone.
Two tremendous detonations like atomic blasts
and hundreds were slain by shards of glass.
Steel missiles propelled as if fired from guns
Decimated or maimed those who had turned to run
from the grizzly sights and horrendous sounds.
Both the quick and the dead dropped to the ground.
The fire-filled harbor boiled and churned,
rose fifteen feet, and thundered ashore to burn,
drown, or save those who'd fallen or were trapped,
as water mains, gas pipes burst; power lines
snapped.
Balls of sisal hurled on high
rained down like fireballs from the sky;
spread tongues of flames along the banks,
and washed into ruptured petrol tanks.
Violent eruptions then from this were wreaked
upon ravaged survivors?.too stunned to speak.
Who staring dockward into thick, coal-black air
Lifted their hands to God and moaned a prayer
That loved ones would be safe and sound?
But one-hundred fifteen of us were never found.
Sixty-three remain unnamed. Each remembered yet.
We were there. We shan't forget.
Hundreds dead. Thousands hurt.
Blocks of homes flattened in the dirt.
Many of us lost everything.
We all still suffer the heartfelt strings
Of losing friends, mates, dads, and mothers,
Children, fellow-workers, sisters, brothers.
We all lost loved ones or folks we met.
We were there. We can't forget.
Lost in grief, awash within, life became surreal.
In time, with faith our wounds began to heal.
Some poor hearts heal 'til now. Others quicker.
While hopes for Texas City's rebirth flickered
Within our minds and in our hearts,
And toward that cause we all took part.
A family of diverse cultures, faiths, and race,
We worked as one and rebuilt a place
Unlike no other community in the land?
One common purpose, hand-in-hand.
A little town that could have quit.
Instead, we deemed it justly fit
To honor our dead with stones set down
and a living memorial; our reborn town.
Dedicated to those we lost-.thought of yet.
We were there. We won't forget.

The Texas Republican Party Platform can be read as a blueprint
for Bush administration policies, and reflects the values of
Dominion Theology.
From George Grant, a leading dominionist writer in The Changing
of the Guard, Biblical Principles for Political Action:
Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy
responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ -- to have
dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of
life and godliness.
But it is dominion we are after. Not just a voice.
It is dominion we are after. Not just influence.
It is dominion we are after. Not just equal time.
It is dominion we are after.
World conquest. That's what Christ has commissioned us to

President Kennedy had printed $50 MILLION in US notes and
planned the dissolve of the Federal Reserve. He learned of the
approval of CIA Operation Northwood, a plan to attack our own bases
in Florida, hijack and blow up airliners, set sniper teams loose in
Florida and Washington, DC, to accomplish "creating a substantial
body count" all to draw American's sympathy for a war in Cuba. A plan
approved all the way up through the Joint Chief of Staff and the Vice
President. President Kennedy was horrified with the plan, he planned
the dissolve of the CIA. President Kennedy Ten days before his
assassination at Columbia University stated; "The high office of
President has been used to format a plot to destroy the American's
freedom, and before I leave office I must inform the citizen of his

To our friends around the world, you may be wondering what is
happening over here in the USA. It is not that difficult to
follow, because it's always about money anyway. A long standing
government within the government, known as a "shadow government"
has stolen Elective Democracy from the American people. This
group is run by the CIA, NSA and NRO. Its combined budget is 50
Billion Dollars (31 "Black Budget" and 19 "Anti Drug").
Combined efforts have created the de facto existence of a police
state.
"A police state is incompatible with liberty. A hundred years
ago the federal government was responsible for enforcing very
few laws. This has dramatically changed. There are now over 3,000
federal laws and 10,000 regulations employing hundreds of
thousands of bureaucrats diligently enforcing them, with over 80,
000 of them carrying guns. We now have an armed national police
state, just as Jefferson complained of King George in the
Declaration of Independence: "He has sent hither swarms of
officers to harass our people and eat out their substance." A
lot of political and police power has shifted from the state and
local communities to the federal government over the past
hundred years. If a constitutional republic is desired and
individual liberty is cherished, this concentration of power
cannot be tolerated."
HON. RON PAUL OF TEXAS (one of the few things he says which are
true) (Otherwise, he's a stooge)
As for the election, the technique employed is known as
"Triangulation", which refers to shooting from three sides, as
in the Murder of John Kennedy, his brother Robert, (both
Catholics) and the Reverend Martin Luther King. Hmmm. read Mark
Zepezauer "The CIA's Greatest Hits"
"Triangulation" of Al Gore was comprised of three elements:
1. Undermining of Election laws targeting Americans of African and
Haitian heritage
2. Court Challenges to stop tabulating votes by hand
3. Conspiracy between the candidates brother, Jeb Bush
(Governor of Florida), the person approving the votes (Katherine
Harris) who was also the candidates' State Party Co-Leader

Pandora's Cornucopia
By Russell Seitz Published 07/02/2003
It was warm work, but the stevedores of Texas City were glad to
be loading the good ship Grandcamp. The Marshall Plan was
ploughsharing ammonium nitrate once bound for bomb casings into
fertilizer for the fields of France.
Hungry Europe needed all the help it could get, but on the
morning of April 16, 1947, the promise of a bumper harvest
turned into Pandora's cornucopia. Some small arms ammunition
elsewhere in the Grandcamp's hold popped off, triggering a
kiloton explosion so ferocious that survivors thought the
Russians had dropped an atom bomb on the harbor. The shock wave
knocked two aircraft out of the sky, and the Grandcamp's massive
anchor crashed into an oil refinery two miles away.
Two weeks ago, a rust bucket from the Black Sea, registered in
the Marshall Islands, cruised into Greek waters under the Comoro
flag of convenience. The Baltic Sky's motley crew of Azeri's and
Ukrainians may have been on an innocent, if under-documented
delivery run from Tunisia to the Sudan, but they carried the
makings of quite a turkey shoot. Aboard were over a million
pounds of ammonium nitrate mining explosives, and an ample
supply of detonating cord and blasting caps, all addressed to a
non-existent firm doing business out of a post office box in
Khartoum.
If you are disconcerted by the idea of a 100-blockbuster time
bomb sailing to Byzantium, or into a marina near you, please
stop here. Or at least sit down and get out your nitroglycerine
tablets. Every day, tens of kilotons of explosives glide through
the cities along America's lazy rivers and busy canals, because
9/11 did not change the price of sustaining America as an
agricultural superpower -- it takes megatons of ammonium nitrate
a year. It is the mother of all dual use materials, equally good
for fertilizing lawns or soy beans or blasting to smithereens
anything civil or military.
Scarcely a decade passes without a ship or barge load going off
by misadventure, rather than malice, and deconstructing some
unfortunate seaport or river city. It's happened in the dead of
peacetime as well as before, during and after wars. And it's
likely to continue for as long as ammonium nitrate's zero-cost
ingredients -- air and water -- make it so tragically cheap. Ten
cents a pound is all the market will bear.
So strong was the resonance of decades of disaster movies and
the devastation of the WTC that the burning towers have crowded
the older iconography of urban obliteration out of the popular
imagination. Who cares why a shallow crater beside the Rhine no
longer contains a town called Oppau, or some old seaports are
oddly devoid of Victorian architecture? Weapons-free mass
destruction leaves few survivors to testify to what malice has
at its disposal. The so-far perfect safety record of such
hazardous commodities as LNG presents a problem -- since only
experience can teach reality, unrealized hazards are often
disregarded as though they were imaginary.
The seizure of the 680-ton cargo of explosives, like the
interdiction of a major heroin shipment, testifies to the
existence of international vigilance, but not its meaningful
success. When a jet fuel tanker the size of a 727 goes off
screen, one ought to worry about more than its possible
rendezvous with a tall building. The bucks from selling a
commercial jet would fetch an awful lot of bang. With ammonium
nitrate at $200 a ton, ten kilotons costs two million dollars.
Right now, 50 kilograms of 50 dollar bills can buy the
equivalent of the Hiroshima bomb, few questions asked, with cash
left over for its convoy.
But come on -- a conventional bomb as big as Hiroshima? A
supertanker loaded with a half-megaton of ANFO plowing through
the Gulf towards Houston seems too corny for a techno-thriller ,
as implausible as an instant replay of the Grandcamp explosion.
What remained of Texas City was rudely reawakened at 1:10 AM on
April 17, 1947. Sixteen hours after the first, another kiloton
of ammonium nitrate had detonated across the harbor aboard the
all too well named High Flyer. Not even Hollywood imagined Qusai
Hussein dropping in on the National Bank of Iraq, and driving
off into the sunrise with ten tons of hundred dollar bills worth
454,000 times their weight in high explosive.
But he did, just as one twentieth of a Hiroshima escaped from
sunny Gabes into NATO waters. It's quite enough to ruin your
entire day even if you're not in the counterterrorism business.
Have a safe and sane Fourth of July.

1947 -- [April 15] US: French freighter Grandcamp docks at Texas
City, Texass (today or 4/16?) & took on 1,400 tons of ammonium
nitrate fertilizer. Tonight a fire broke out in the hold, a
ball of fire engulfed the ship, & a nearby Monsanto chemical
plant exploded, killing & maiming hundreds of workers &
spectators. Most of the business district was devastated, &
fires raged along the waterfront, where huge tanks of butane gas
stood imperiled. Shortly after midnight, a second freighter,
also carrying nitrates, exploded, & the whole sequence began
again. At least 468 people died, & another 1,000 were seriously
injured in the disaster. The probable cause of the gcamp.xxinitial blast
was careless smoking aboard the Grandcamp.

http://www.ralphmag.org/CF/new.html
It happened on April 17, 1947. A French ship --- the Grandcamp ---
caught fire and exploded in the Texas City harbor (Texas City
lies on the eastern Gulf Coast, not far from the Louisiana
border). The ship was filled with sodium nitrate, a compound
used in fertilizer, but, as well, in the manufacture of bombs.
And it didn't end with just one ship exploding, for in the
vicinity there were "catalytic crackers, cracking furnaces,
steam, superheaters, domed oil storage tanks, catwalks,
condensors ... all of it coursing with the liquid lifeblood of
Texas City: millions of barrels of oil, gas, benzol, propane,
benzene, kerosene, chlorine, styrene, hydrochloric acid, and a
necromancer's trough of every other petrochemical imaginable."
For decades, this billion-dollar stretch of oil refineries, oil
tank farms, and chemical plants has been turned into one of the
most lucrative, strategic petrochemical centers in the world by
the Rockefellers, Howard Hughes, and even the far flung members
of the Bush family.
As the author points out, when disaster struck, "It claimed more
lives on American soil than any other man-made disaster in the
twentieth century."
Thousands of people were killed or wounded, a fire department
was erased, planes fell from the sky, oceangoing freighters
vanished. The most powerful people of the era --- the president,
Supreme Court justices, military commanders, Hollywood
superstars, FBI directors --- were drawn into the plot.
They are coated white from the cascading asbestos." Some of the
white patients are so coated with the tarry stuff that they end
up for days in a segregated hospital --- the charity hospital
for Blacks.
The author puts off the actual moment of disaster long enough to
keep us in suspenders. The second and third acts are as gripping.
Where to bury the sixty-three unidentified dead? Nearby towns
refuse to make land available to bury them. Why? Because in the
all the little bits and pieces left over from the victims, it
was possible there might be body parts of Blacks or Mexicans.
Finally, there's the question of the defense department and the
large corporations that created this witch's brew

My Grandpa was working at Monsanto when the Grandcamp blew. He
was an operator at the old sugar refinery, which had been
converted into a polystyrene unit to produce synthetic rubber
for the war. He stepped out of the building to a small brick
outhouse, and that is what saved his life, although blood clots
from severe bruising damaged his heart and lungs so badly he
could never work again. He tried, even after all the horror and
grief he experienced. But his body wouldn't let him do it.
A link to some photographs follows. Two people came out of the
styrene unit alive, and as you can see it was a fairly large
structure.

Cameron was also discredited by a federal judge as an expert

"Dr. Paul Cameron...has himself made misrepresentations to

POET'S POSTSCRIPT
I started working on this a few weeks ago. Before that, I
had never even heard of Texas City, Texas (sounds a bit
redundant). I would have posted it last weekend, but I
got annoyed by a newspaper article that praised a meeting
of Catholic conservatives, who basically were saying that
gays were in a class with things ungodly, profane, and
pornographic.
I said that this kind of attitude could lead to an unhealthy
balkanization, and someday you might witness a scene
on St. Patrick's Day (where Boston gays have been excluded)
similar to the Northern Ireland Orange Order parades,
where violence is typical between Protestants and Catholics.
Seemed reasonable- not even Protestants in Ireland, or
Catholics in Ireland are putting up with quite the same
degree of open, officially-sanctioned insult or inequality
under the law.
Within a matter of hours, there was an incident at
a St. Patrick's day parade, not in Boston, but in a
nearby town called Scituate. A 76 year-old man
rammed a car into the crowd. No explanation given
in the papers.
The man was drunk. Lots of things are possible. Maybe
he had a stroke, maybe he suffers dementia because
of his age. Somehow, though, it sounded like he
intentionally attacked the parade. The reaction of
the witnesses certainly seemed to be to that effect.
The world being as upside-down as it is, you would
expect that if anything, the man was someone was
a trivial grievance, just as in an accident with a drunk
driver, it seems like it is always the drunk who lives.
However, regardless of what the motives might have
been, it is not difficult to imagine why gay people,
who have been so badly demonized by the Church,
could become provoked enough to go over the
edge.
The incident was extremely ugly, but somehow it
seemed to vindicate the message of last week's post,
which was basically to the religious bigots
that "You are playing with real fire, you have
been playing with fire for a long, long, time,
and eventually your luck could run out".
Anyway, that was Sunday's coincidence. I got back
to working on the poem/surrealism concerning Texas
City. I had already written all but the few last lines
of this. I had spent several weeks, googling things
like "Texas City explosion", etc.
I don't write these things particularly to be entertaining.
It is a bit like sticking pins in a voodoo doll.
I've never studied or had any interest in the occult,
but it has just been a recurring theme in my life, that
when I starting sticking the pins, things start happening.
Life feels a bit like a Twilight Zone episode. Sometimes,
the things that happen hardly seem real.
I was not surprised at all that Wednesday's coincidence
was a new explosion in the very city that I had been
so intently googling, over its 1947 explosion.
I had never heard of the 1947 explosion, either,
until a couple weeks ago. I became preoccupied
with it. I was amused/fascinated by the weird little
details- "Father Roach", the breaking of the doughnut,
etc. I wanted to write a surrealistic version,
using an accurate description of many, perfectly
real details, to illustrate the ridiculous surrealism of
everyday life.
I had been actually focusing on Houston, really just because
it was the largest city in the home state of Bush, whom
I resented deeply for scapegoating gays as a political
strategy.
I have long resented Texas, because I was aware
of the dozens of anti-gay murders there, and the
attitudes of politicians. I recall a judge in Texas
saying "Killing a gay man is like killing a prostitute,
I can't conceive of giving as harsh a sentence."
I recall a bailiff who said that raping a lesbian
should be a misdemeanor. I recall a Republican
party official who openly advocated death penalty
for gays. I recall how the genocide-advocate,
Dr. Paul Cameron, once consulted for the Houston
City Council. I recall how there were billboards
saying "Save Houston from the Sodomites".
After dozens of murders, Bush dodged a hate-crimes
bill, for the sake of his political ambitions.
Texas did later (with Bush safely out of the picture)
eventually pass a hate-crimes bill. When I read that,
I almost lost interest in this post, until I read how
the Texas GOP platform is calling for its repeal,
and to recriminalize gays. When I read the
stomach-turning platform of the Texas GOP, I wouldn't
really care if I picked up a paper and read that Houston
had been leveled by a nuclear bomb. If the GOP can
be like this, without any widespread rounds of unambiguous
condemnation, I wouldn't really care if the entire
country went up in bright-orange nuclear fireballs.
How can I express my feelings? The 15 people killed
is a regrettable thing. However, there is in my view a
sort of "bad karma" hanging over the state. If this
repulsive level of hateful bigotry is the best that
the human race can do, I wouldn't really care if
every last man, woman and child on the planet
were annihilated, and the species became extinct.
I break no laws, I conspire with no one, I threaten
no one, in any physical or literal way. I stick pins
in dolls, with words and images, which is what
I was doing with all this verbiage about Texas City.
Most people would not really believe that mere
imagery and emotional intent can affect reality,
but I wish to take away their ability to disbelieve,
eventually by overwhelming with uncanny coincidence.
I don't really believe in God, but I believe that if there
were a God, the judgment would be on the side of
the avenging angel, under these circumstances.
If Europe had not overcome its anti-Semitism
in World War II, it would have been OK for Europe
to cease to exist. If the U.S. had not gotten
over the racist institution of slavery, it would have
been OK in the Civil War if the country had ceased
to exist.
If the Churches, the GOP, and the human race in general
cannot get over their poisonous attitudes toward gays,
it would be OK if the human race ceased to exist.
Tom Keske
