Brandon, The Quotation of Suzanne Cesaire from the 1941 issue of, "TROPIQUES"
is a very important statement for all Surrealists to look into, "FAR FROM
CONTRADICTING, DILUTING,OR DIVERTING OUR REVOLUTIONARY ATTITUDE TOWARD LIFE,
SURREALISM STRENGTHENS IT. IT NOURISHES AN IMPATIENT STRENGTH WITHIN US,
ENDLESSLY REINFORCING THE MASSIVE ARMY OF REFUSALS. AND I AM ALSO THINKING OF
TOMORROW". by S.Cesaire from Brandon and Shibek's Review. NOW, This is what
concerns me: 4 YEARS from writing that quote in the publication, "TROPIQUES",
Cesaire places emphasis on, "TOMORROW". There was a Gathering of Surrealists in
1945 at Pierre Matisse's apartment in New York. Those in attendance were:
Roberto Matta/ Yves Tanguy/ Aime Cesaire/ Suzanne Cesaire/ Henri Seyrig/ Andre
Breton/ Elisa Breton/ Nicolas Calas/ Denis de Rougemont/ Marcel Duchamp/
Esteban Frances/ Sonia Sekula/ and a few others. In May of that same year, The
Pierre Matisse Gallery has a show, Yves Tanguy: PAINTINGS, and Andre Breton
feels that Tanguy has developed bourgeois sympathies for financial security.
Breton even goes so far as to challenge Pierre Matisse to terminate his
contract with Tanguy. Max Ernst who was present defends Tanguy for his
exhibtions.Ernst also acts a mediator between Tanguy and Breton up until 1953.
NOW, The SYSTEMATIC CONFLICTS that are FACT in this movement could be more
effictively addressed with the proper timing. Question to all Surrealists
Today? Would the Rift between Breton and Tanguy in 1945 be prevented if not
brought attention at the Group Meeeting in Pierre Matisse's Apartment in that
same year? It is a fact they (Tanguy and Breton) drifted from one another (not
completley) so the inevitable lack of openess between TWO of the most Strongest
Forces within the Movement at that time could have Kept the Movement more
Active and Strong, if this rift could have been prevented sooner? Why would
Breton make his feelings about Tanguy's alleged, "Bourgeois Sympathies" clear
at the meeting at Matisse's apartment OR DID HE? However, another example of
Internal Conflicts within Surrealism that maybe could have been avoided ALL FOR
THE HOPE OF A BETTER TOMORROW as Cesaire DESIRES!
