3rd Generation Surrealist Movement

Why not start a 3rd Generation Surrealist movement? There have been a few more
posts here recently, and the posters do run the gamut. There are those who
have strong knowledge of the historical precedents of Surrealism and apprehend
the context from which it unfurled. There are those who are academically bent,
possessing a keen intellect and good memory for many events, persons, works of
art and literature, etc. There are poets and journalists, masters of ambiguity
and radical juxtaposition, as well as purveyors of the bizarre.
Perhaps delineating such a movement would be a mistake, tagging an organic
flow, but there could be a basic framework or a few loose guidelines. A
prerequisite would be a look to the past, and a vision for a future. What are
the things that impel you? What are the things that are universal among us?
Is there something creative and bold to be manifest here?

Perhaps an alt.sur FAQ, website or web 'zine would be a good place to start to head
in that direction. Tho I would leave it to more capable minds to hash out the
intellectual directions of such an endeavor, I could certianly handle the nuts and
bolts of it. If one can be put together, I'd be willing to host the space for it on
the web and write it up the HTML. We could cull designs from the artists here to
make it visually stimulating, print articles/poetry/rants/links/etc. Could be a
gas....

While thinking of a positive response to your excellent idea , I turned away from

I saw rooftops and treetops in the lower 20 percent of the frame , the rest of the

was filled with a blue sky containing a huge white cloud that was a exact, almost
perfect image of Long Island NY , but this is the strange part- it was a mirror
image.

me something" but I don't know what ? Now the cloud has gone and I feel foolish.

Yes, I would have some interest in a loose association, if we can find some
consensus among those loosely associated. This would, however, be more
properly called the 4th generation of surrealism:

1. the Surrealists between the world wars (you know who)
2. the post-war Surrealists (Lamantia, Cesariny...)
3. the Surrealists of the 60's-70's (e.g. the "Surrealist Insurrection")
4. the 80's-90's (your name here)

In any case I wouldn't like such a confining label... the label
"alt.surrealism" says it all for me... looking both into past and future while
remaining very much a construct of our times. Perhaps those so willing could
collaborate on a web page or web ring for starters...

We should all have a glass of wine or coffee together... even if it turns out
to be virtual... I suppose it's up to the one who is most motivated and
organised to start the ball floating...

Why not start with a web page where we can send a few paragraphs and a
picture. I always wondered more about the posters to this newgroup.

Hey, did anyone follow xepera's link to Coagula? They seem to be connected to  The Massurrealist Society . Very interesting... It seems to fit in with what the surrealists (both poets and artists) here are doing in the literal sense of the word massurrealism, tho I agree with elag that a title is a bit confining and tends to label. Not only that, but the true heart of alt.sur is the dynamic of what goes on here in the group. A website on the whole is a static thing (as opposed to a newsgroup). A web page, site or whatever, would probably be best suited for being a reference to the group, what we do here, the people involved, their forte (sound/visual/poetic), etc. It could give solidarity to the group, yet not take the focus off of alt.sur itself. Hopefully it would also make us look more organized than we actually are ;)
This group (alt.sur) seems to have a great knack for taking ideas and bouncing them around between one another, and coming up with different, interesting things (at least when were not arguing about silly shit). That's something that hasn't been addressed yet in art, at least as far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong); creating an image/poem/wordplay, sending it to a public forum where it's changed around, manipulated and turned into something new, essentially taking on a life of it's own, with it's dynamic lifespan being the length of a newsgroup thread. Truly mass surrealist art. Any comments?
Idea off the cuff: I'm sure that most of the people in this group surf around looking at sites occasionally. Maybe when we find a site of an artist/poet/surrealist that might apprecieate what we do here, we should drop a note in their mailbox inviting them to participate or at least to lurk in the group. If they  enjoy what we do here and participate, that would add even more flavor to what we already have. (I think I'll go check my site bookmarks now)
