I think the Ocean Has Died

in Huntington. Was on my way to the pier at 4:00 PM. Once I came up over the
hill for my first glance at the ocean, I simply could not believe it! I am
not kidding, it was Blood Red as far as you could see. Not the slightly
tinged red as in years past, IT WAS BLOOD RED. It was the ugliest I have
ever seen our ocean.
So lets sum it up here-
1. We have had the coldest summer water temps ever-
2. We have not had a decent swell in weeks-
3. We are being invaded by thousands of Jelly Fish-
4. We have had (- )tides in the AM
5. Onshore winds 6 out of 7 mornings.
6. AM low clouds have been persistent since May.
I think someone is trying to tell us something.

out a few of my music students (college age) for their "introduction to
surfing." We were at lifeguard station #20, at Bay Street. Kelp and
chunks of jellyfish everywhere, and lots of plasticy garbage in the
water too. Even a few gobs of tar. If these folks hadn't made such an
effort to show up, I would have told them all to go home. As it turned
out, the waves were just big enough (knee high sets) to push them on
some old 9' sponge boards, and they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I
was just hoping nobody would get stung or drink a mouthful of what was
out there. Yuccchhhh!
It'll probably take a few days of large surf (whenever that'll be) to
mash up all the crap in the water. Until then, it looks like I'll be
getting a lot done around the house.

I bicycled the shoreline yesterday popping kelp bubbles like bubble
wrap and had to dodge all the solid red Jelly fish. I've never seen
that kind of jelly fish before here (I usually see the clear kind with
on a bit of color) much less in such numbers. Don rigged the bike so
that I can have the short board in the rear mount and the longboard on
a trailer simultaneously (just in case I can't decide). No parking, no
problem.

issues.
It also concerns me whats happening to our planet.....how bad does it have
to get before humankind wakes up !

marine layer near the beach but relatively clean. I'm still comfortable
in a 4/3 wetsuit. We had chest high swells this weekend. The water did
get kinda funky last month for about a week though.

Not only is Huntington Beach a surf wasteland w the jellyfish thick
enough to walk on, Central Park area has an explosion of skunks. The
area has stunk almost every night for 2 months. When they get run over
by a car and start heating up in the sun-ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Yes- half of the things you noted are not particularly unusual.
I do agree that we could sure do with a good southern hemi right about
now.
Take a bag next time you go to the beach and pick up some trash. Builds
character.

This morning the red tide pulled back about 1/4 mile offshore. I paddled out
on my longboard (7-4 single fin egg) and was stoked to be out there with a
bunch of little leopard sharks and bowling ball jellies and all sorts of
fish swimming around. Amazing what the clear glassy water will do for the
senses. Of course, I timed this paddle for the optimal morning tide push
just in case a bump or two may happen to stray by. And of course, they did,
so I grabbed a shitload of leetle shoulders - nose takeoffs, set rail and
glide.
Just felt good to get wet.
Pray for swell.
Offer sacrifices.
Asplode the thermos!

swim after work today. This time of year, it's too easy to get out of

I went to a party last night to celebrate CJ's 21st birthday. A few of
the kids were surf instructors and said that part of what they do is
grab any jellyfish they see in the water by the top and deposit it on
land so that it won't sting their young charges. Some are so big it
takes two guys to haul them out.
There was an interesting kid there that lives in Pavones, Costa Rica,
in a home without electricity, where he says only 100 people live full
time. He grew up living on a 45' tri hull boat anchored in Oceanside
and the family sailed to CR and just never came back (to live). He
said his family is now in the boat repair business there. He thinks
people here are not that friendly and looks forward to going home after
his visit here. CJ will go there to visit the family for a month next
month.
