So...........? Lace up the thong Sully and get on down!!
-FOON
Will it feature that shapely babe of the PNW, Miss Lemmings, reputed
to have those buns you can crack a nut on?
I haven't heard of it! Definitely will look for it. Hopefully it
hangs in long enough to be showing at the Lido in August. We always
luck out.
Say hi to J. for me.
Saw it last night. There are some cool segments, but the movie is
uneven. The sound sucked and the projectionist had the volume _way_
too loud. It's still a work in process, so they'll probably get that
fixed by the time it's released. The beginning shows a history of
women surfers and it has some nice footage. Then came a series of
contemporary surfers, from an all-girl surfari to Mexico, a seamstress
who makes her own boardshorts, a gal who sailed solo on her yacht to
Polynesia from Cal, a shaper who rides her own boards, and Judith. Oh,
and there was some mediocre (IMO) skateboard stuff, too.
As a premiere, most of the filmmakers were there, along with most of
the women in the film, from Linda Benson to Lisa Anderson. They had a
bunch of giveaways, including a hot pink bikini that went to some old
geezer - NOT ME! (It seemed there were a bunch of old surfer dudes
with their daughters in the audience.) The shaper's board was one of
the giveaways, and they had a quiz to find the winner. The questions
were:
Who was the first surfer in Australia?
Who was the first woman to surf the Pipeline?
Who was the first woman to surf Mavericks?
The winner was a woman who works in a surf museum, of course.
Judith sat next to me at the show, and a bunch of us went for mexfood
afterwards. For those who don't know her, she is an ex-competitive
swimmer who has a PhD in geology, and bodysurfs big waves in NorCal.
She has had multiple sclerosis for 20 years, but just got diagnosed
this year. She's an incredible woman with more balls than most men I
know. The past two years, the film crew has been following her around,
trying to get footage of her on waves. There were a couple of shots of
her driving on waves at OB and some guy on a board just blatantly
dropping in and landing on her. After he did it, she swam over to the
guy and told him about the cameras, and he was going to be famous. So
he did it again. (I assume you guys in SF will out the guy.) The
segment on Judith was one of the better parts of the movie.
It was a fun night, especially with the crowd hooting and cheering
like the old days when Bud Browne would narrate his flicks at junior
high schools.

Judith is very cool and very smart. I cannot imagine how she does what
she does with MS. I met her once on Kauai and talked for a few
minutes. As a geochemist, I have some things in common with her, but I
don't have anything close to her courage or stamina.
As for the dic who dropped in on her, may SUP's paddle into his waves.
May he suck fumes from personal watercraft and tow at assholes. May
longboards crowd his line up.
George, I see that you are profiled as a non-profiled "reader" of the
book, "200 Years of Surfing Literature." Guess that makes you a legend!
Pretty awesome, eh?
I did a little editorial work for a friend who helped publish it.
