Judge Gives Surfer 9 Months for Assault on Teenager at Beach

VENTURA--A surfer was sentenced to nine months in jail and
banned from a Ventura County beach for three years for slamming his
board into the face of a teenager who tried to surf a wave he claimed.
Allen "Carter" Slade, 32, had been convicted of assault with a
deadly weapon and felony witness intimidation after violently
enforcing a "locals only" credo at Silver Strand beach, a popular
surf spot.
Ventura County prosecutors hope the judge's ruling to prohibit
Slade from surfing Silver Strand will discourage such bullying.
"The no-surf terms really strike at the heart of what we are
trying to stop," said Deputy Dist. Atty. Chrystina Jenson.
The assault occurred last summer during a swell at the Oxnard-
area beach where clashes between local and out-of-town surfers have
erupted for years.
The trouble started when a 19-year-old Port Hueneme surfer
dropped in on a wave Slade claimed.
Slade, who lives in the Silver Strand neighborhood, responded by
paddling up to the teenager, yanking the intruder's board leash and
spearing the teenager in the face with the tip of his own surfboard,
Jenson said.
A second surfer, a 35-year-old man who also lives at Silver
Strand, witnessed the assault, paddled over to help the injured
teenager and encouraged him to report the incident to police, Jenson
said.
"The defendant threatened him and said, 'Watch your back. You're
next,' " she said.
Two days later, Slade identified the man to a surfing buddy,
Jason Brouchard, who punched him, rupturing his eardrum, Jenson said.
Brouchard pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery and witness
intimidation.
Slade was charged with two felony counts. He denied the charges
and said he had been defending himself. Last month, a jury disagreed
and convicted him on both counts, Jenson said.
Five years ago, another surfer, 22-year-old David Ortega,
pleaded no contest to battery after tackling a novice surfer in the
parking lot at Port Hueneme Beach. Ortega was placed on probation and
prohibited from surfing at that beach.
He violated the order two days after sentencing and received a
six-month jail term.
On Friday, a day after Slade's sentencing, Jenson said she was
fielding calls from surfing magazines about the case and the terms of
his probation.
"I hope this sends a message to surfers and the community," she
said, "that this type of behavior won't be tolerated."

Life preserver (board) hit you in the head?... I'm not Cortical, I don't hate Jews and blacks... only those that need a frikkin dick replacing piece of foam to float on to keep from drowning, and then try to rule the lineup with it. A good buddy of mine keeps trying to get me to ride with him and his shaper... when sombedy paddles within 100 feet of this shaper he gets tweaked and emits stuff like "the guy's sniffin my balls man". You guys are a real piece of work... most all of you. I've been hangin with surfers for 30 years and met about 5 I liked. Its why I bodysurf full time now, I'm disgusted with the mentality. Even pros, guys like Tudor who you expect to be cordial are assholes in the lineup. I've heard stories of that punk almost getting his ass kicked at Pipeline by local bodysurfers who were ripping the place when he was a wad of jizz, because he had no respect for anyone else and was dropping in on everybody. What do you expect I guess since another asshole (Nat Young) brought him up.
I enjoy nothing more than swimming out with a dozen easy, family oriented (athletes) bodysurfers and dominating a lineup with no bs... its the most fun you can have. And most bodysurfers don't take shit from anybody... don't need weapons (boards) and don't sucker punch kids, guys smaller than them and don't gang bang lone watermen.

That incedent started with one of the Bothello brothers in a heat during the Redwings contest with Alec Cooke. (Bothello is one of the Hawaiians that ignore the law and surf through the Panics lineup-- been tension over it lately). After the heat Bothello punched Alec out. I don't know what went down in the heat, but know the beating was merciless.

Yeah, I'll be there. Will try a different setup for the cold (bigger fin, thick booty). Haven't been riding for the past month... its been pityful, getting a winter coat even though I've been working out.
About that last rant... dam I get pissed when I hear about stuff like that! See ya in Santa Cruz... will be dropping wife off in San Fran at youngest daughter's and driving down to the Brewery Fri nite, probably to Kristen's after... no sleeping on beach this time.

need to boost your low self esteem by taking

I'm sure you would get a very different opinion. Many of us come across
different on the ng, it's a classic mistake to form severe and harsh opinions

I love to bodysurf with longboarders- especially a lot of them.
I get bloody tired from all the waves I catch.
They keep pushing each other farther and farther out
to be sure they got inside postition. As a set
builds, they take off from the Farrallons paddling
like hell, until they hit their anaerobic threshold,
tired weak muscles imbedded in the fat all fired out
and seized, the wave goes on without them on it.
The shortboards and bodyboards line up inside that
but with the fatman invasion coming at them, they
generally don't take off. I'm inside those
guys and get a clean glassy face all to my lonesome.
One kick wonder.

I love longboarding. The modern board designs could
