What may seem to be a normal scratch that we get during any-day
activities could be life-threatening. It's kinda scary, really. A
local photographer, the guy that took my pictures last summer, got a
small cut on his wrist that allowed some nasty bacteria to invade his
system. Ends up, he needed hospitalization, and daily returns for IV
antibiotics.

In NJ just before Christmas, my nephew scratched his arm on the
railing at his house; a tiny scratch actually. Same thing happened to
him. Severe pain, purple veins. He may need to get an operation once
the infection is under control.

I cut my foot on the reef last week-just a scratch, but I've been
cleaning it a couple times a day just to be safe. Also, skipping out
on surfing until it heals. Paranoia strikes deep. Superbugs are here!
There too! OMG they're everywhere!

It can get really nasty in the tropics. Used to get some damn awful
reef scrapes and cuts when a kid in PR that would take forever to heal
- flesh eating type wounds.

I know what you mean about bacteria. In 2005, my son and I went to
Tavarua for the best week of surfing in my life. My last day there, I
got bounced off the bottom and scratched my lower back pretty badly.
Put some antiseptic on it after the session and went home to the USA.
The day after we got home, I had a raging fever, and the scratches
were all infected. To make a long story short, I had a bad staph
infection, spent 16 days in the hospital, and nearly died. It took
about 5 months for me to heal and two operations. Now, I have a
healthy respect for those little critters.

I met a diabetic surfer in the lineup one time who reckoned he had
to be careful across the barnacles as his cuts would hardly heal.
I think that's right, it's something about blood flow, or glucose
levels mucking up healing, or both ...
