I just got back from Sebastian Inlet. At low tide it was overhead and
just sick, pitching barrels at First Peak. I was surfing around the
inside, and over near Second Peak (I'm part of the "B-Team", if you
will). Of course, Hartley was commanding the A-Team lineup. I hate to be
blunt, but he's a wave hog. I don't really care, because it doesn't
affect me, but he takes every good wave that comes through, calling
everyone else off in the process, no matter if they are in front or
behind him. He even calls waves before they come within range. Everyone
is afraid of him, too. I heard a story about him where he not only
jumped on a guy for dropping in, but punched him out in the process.
Maybe they all remember that.

As if this wasn't bad enough, he yells and curses at his waves, no
matter how good they are. Seriously. When he misses a wave, you can hear
the "F*CK!!" all the way from the parking lot. Normally I just laugh at
it, but there was one particular instance this morning that just made me
want to leave.

A good set came through, and of course Hartley was on the first one. He
took off deep and pulled in. The wave just barreled all the way through.
He was in it for a good while but got clipped near the end. He came up
screaming and cursing, loud as ever. I feel sorry for the tourists who
walk the jetty (but not the fishermen :). He was embarassing us all. The
thing is, that wave was SICK. Anyone else, except maybe Slater, would
have been more than happy just to get that kind of a view for so long. I
mean, I realize that he's serious about his surfing, but come on.

I would venture to say that every place has a jerk like that. We have a
couple of our own out here. It's a shame when one person completely ruins
the session for everybody else with a lousy attitude and a potty-mouth. I
know how you feel. Some times I just wait for the jerks to get out of the
water. It sucks to miss good waves but its better than having a bummer sesh.

Personally, I think surfing means something completely different. I used
to surf the sebastian area about 15 years ago. I have not been back in the
water there for at least five years. Don't surf with people like that!
Don't go to their contests, don't buy any of their products, let the
manufacturer know what a poor rep someone like that is for any product....
The clean experience of surfing is spoiled when someone tries to turn it
into something ugly.

We can only pity someone like that because a bad wave for me must be better
than a 3 second barrell for him! I choose to surf alone most of the time
and am far happier. I suggest you all think of trying to surf alone more
often. When you see someone out alone at a local break.....paddle out
several hundred feet away. Hooting, screaming and stealing waves should be
left to the kooks at Sebastian like Mr. Hartley.

I agree. I can't stand loud-mouths in the water. I don't mind sharing
waves, there's usually enough to go around, but what I hate is when
everyone is in their own groove, and someone comes out yelling and hooting
and hollering or trying to talk to someone 20 yards away. Some people will
do anything for attention. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to hear only
"'morning", and "going right" or "going left". Just my $.02.
