I'm watching a roof peel off a house on The Weather Channel, which is hyping
Claudette for all she's worth. A guy is standing next to the water, battling
the wind, and they're talking about huge waves. Any other first hand reports
from the TX coast??? Inquiring minds up north are anticipating an active
tropical season, and any information is much appreciated!

Funny you should mention that, because I was just thinking
the same thing. It's not like we've had a conga line of
storms or anything, but I can just *feel* an active
season coming up. The signs are all there: A tropical
storm forming in *April*, Bill staying formidable even
as it tracked across the mainland and survived enough
to generate a decent groundswell off the East Coast (U.S.), and
Claudette holding on and even reaching hurricane strength despite the
dreaded shear that had been persistent.

These signs along with a slow, but steady development
of systems (I think that system se of Bermuda is gonna
be next) is giving me the sense that this season is going
to follow the statistical climatology for storms. That
means the first half of September is gonna have several
storms. Which, now brings me to what this was all leading
up to: I am hereby making my annual guarantee that this
year's GP on Hatteras will have surfable waves. And,
having that *feeling* I mentioned earlier about this
year's season, I am going to take the prediction even
further: There is a *slight* chance the waves at this
year's GP may exceed those of that epic first year, but
I think it will definitely rank at least second-best.

This early prediction and guarantee is made for two
reasons: One - My confidence about this season, and
Two - I had to make it before Rod and the infamous
3 pre-empted my prediction and made it for me, resulting in
me getting all pissed off at their audacity.

Here's to the waves.

Surf on.

On CBS yesterday I saw a fella that looked alot like Surfgeo coasting to
shore on reform. I'm sure he'll have a story to tell. Right now he may be
stacking sandbags in front of his garage door.

I'm glad you stepped up to the plate early this year Steve. the GP coordinating
committee was witholding any prediction since in past years our have put a
whammy on spectacular wavage. I too have sensed a growing stoke that this year
will be better than years previous and possibly better than the first (if you
can remember that stuff.) I believe the combination of Atlantic stirrings, GP in
Mid Sept. and your guarantee, will make for a fool proof scenario of GP fun.

Audacity no, impatience yes. Plus we needed a OB veteran to run interference for
us should it tank.

If that's what it takes to generate waves, I'll give you a 12 pack.

I'm also optimistic about this fall. Last year was kind of a let down. I
remember a stretch of 5 straight days surfing chest-high to well overhead
juice from one of the storms (Erin?) in September, but not much else in the
way of big 'uns from the tropics. (I shattered the cartilage in my nose on
the last of those five days when my own board clocked me in the face as I
fell. Made it all the more memorable.)

The estimable Dr. Gray predicts an active season. I won't make it to the GP
gathering, but I'll be dutifully sacrificing/praying/paying homage to King
Netptune and the all the gods and goddesses of the sea and air to get things
spinning!

I tip my own bottle in your general direction. Good words.

Steve, take a look at the temperatures right near the coast of Florida now.
It's been FREEZING for weeks (and I mean wetsuit freezing - most people
have been wearing at least a lycra vest) and in spite of this, we have
formations already. We've also had waves all summer so far; in fact, I can
only remember a couple of days when it wasn't rideable. The water temps
would seem to inhibit formation of anything, but it's just not holding up
(the cold temps are very close to shore from upwelling though, not the ocean
temps).

This might just very well be the year... especially since the forecast is
coming early and true from the The Mind, and not kursed by the infamous
three. When might we expect you down at the House this year, SteveM (and
Myron?). I've got the feeling that we'll fill fast and furious as the
conga lines start to form. On a related note there is a planned
gathering of East Coast kneeboarders during the same weekend.

I'm still going to tentatively plan on being there the first weekend
of the event. I'll know for sure as the date gets closer,
Myron
