Unfortunately there was another serious attack today in SA. The person
who was attacked (at Gonubie Point, just north of East London) had his
leg amputated above the knee late this afternoon. His heart stopped
twice - first time on the beach and second time in the ambulance - but
he was fortunately resuscitated both times.

His body supply of blood has had to be replaced at least twice as he
is a haemophiliac. He is fighting for his life at the moment. His
name is Anton. Please keep your thoughts with him.

Sorry to hear this, it is very sad in deed.

Is 'SA' South Africa? I recall it used to be referred to as RSA or, could SA
be southern Australia? I'm not familiar with the beaches you refer to. Thanks
for any feed back.

A bodyboarder. I will post updates on his progress.

Regretably Anton de Vos, yesterday's shark attack victim at Gonubie,
died about an hour and a half ago. 1998 has been a terrible year for
sharks here.

How sad for his family and friends:-(

My wife and I have been hosting two young surfer's from Durban the past 4 days.
I showed them your original post about the attack and mention was made the
area of the attack was apparently near a river mouth that outstanding surf but
also a reputation for aggressive sharks.

When my daughter lived on the North Shore, she passed along a number of (tiger)
shark attacks that occured over a period of months. There were always small
articles in the local newsletter but rarely if ever articles in the main HI
newspapers (tourism?).

Regrets to the Vos family from California.

Seems like it was a good year for sharks, bad for humans...

Very sad, sorry to hear that.

Sorry to perpetuate the shark stuff, but I heard a story that I would like
verified.

On one our trips to Fla. our limo driver told us that he used to surff J-Bay.
He said that fisherman caught quite a few Great Whites on a routine basis about
200 yards south of there.

What do you think, Napalm baby?

Correct. As far as I know there has never been an attack (previously)
at Gonubie, although the entire city of East London (Gonubie is on the
outskirts) has the worst rep for sharks in South Africa. Nahoon Reef
has had no less than 16 shark attacks in the last 40 years - a scary
stat for a single beach. Everyone generally acknowledges East London
as the "shark capital", certainly in South Africa and probably in the
world.

Where Anton was attacked the waves break *very* close to the dry shelf
- although I see JD Spammer's post indicates otherwise. I've only
surfed Gonubie a handful of times, and to be honest I don't recall a
rivermouth at all - but I'm not certain. If there is a rivermouth, I
think it is down by Gonubie Reef, a left hander around the Bay, and
not Gonubie Point, which is the righthander where Anton was attacked.

Also, SurffOhio's message hasn't come up on my server yet, so I'll
answer it here...

There are sharks in Jeffreys Bay. It doesn't have a "shark problem",
but there are sharks. About three weeks ago there was a heavy attack
at The Point (surf spot about 1km north of Supertubes) where the
victim (J-H.O) had some very serious damage inflicted on his leg. His
calf was literally hanging off in some places and he had to undergo
intensive surgery. Co-incidentally, another shark attack victim (MJ)
was admitted to the same hospital as he was on the same day. The other
shark victim - also a bodyboarder - had his tricep taken off (don't
quote me on that, but I believe that was the extent of his injury) at
PE's wildside.

PE's wildside and Jeffrey's Bay face each other. They are opposite
ends of a massive basin.

The amount of shark attacks over the last year are not normal. This is
about the 10th or 11th one, of which three have been fatal.

As for the J-Bay/shark issue, I think 200 yards sounds like a
overcall. Maybe someone on this group comes from J-Bay though and can
confirm/deny that info.
