HAWAIIAN ISLAND CREATIONS PRO
REWARDED FOR GOING THE DURATION.
PUERTO RICAN CABERO CLAIMS VICTORY.
Pipeline, Oahu, HAWAII - (Friday, February 25, 2000) -- Carlos
Cabero
became the first Puerto Rican to win a professional surfing
tournament in
Hawaii, when he took first place in the Hawaiian Island
Creations (HIC)
Pro at Pipeline today. Cabero was one of three Puerto Ricans
offered a
start in the Hawaiian Asahi Grand Slam of Surfing series, of
which
today's HIC Pro was the fourth and final event. He surfed to a
unanimous
victory in excellent 8-10 feet conditions in the final.
After holding out to the very last day of the waiting period,
competitors
and organizers were rewarded when they arrived to find great six
to eight
foot waves this morning. But it just kept getting better. With
the swell
out of the north-west, the left-hand tube-rides of the Banzai
Pipeline
were firing. There were a few waves at the Backdoor first thing
in the
morning, but by final time, it was all Pipeline.
Cabero was in unbeatable form by the time he hit the final,
surfing to an
incredible victory over Kauai pair Braden Dias and Andy Irons,
with
Australian Junior champion Dean Morrison bringing in fourth
place in the
four-man final. The Puerto Rican's score-line included a perfect
10 point
tube ride along with a string of other high scores, earning him
the first
place purse of US$4,000.
It was an impressive result for Cabero, whose list of defeats
today
included that of Pancho Sullivan, Michael Ho, Myles Padaca, and
David
Gonsalves, clearly making the most of his opportunity to take on
Hawaii's
best surfers in some of the world's best waves.
"I am very proud to be the first Puerto Rican to win a
professional
competition in Hawaii," said Cabero. "I would like to dedicate
this win
to Puerto Rico and to my brother."
Defending HIC champion Derek Ho lost out in the semi-finals
today, losing
to Dias and Irons.
Asahi Grand Slam of Surfing ratings leader Pancho Sullivan held
onto the
Asahi Grand Slam champion title, despite a loss to Cabero in the
round
prior to the quarter finals today. Second place for the series
went to
Dias, with Myles Padaca in third.
"We experienced a truly great inaugural year this year," series
Director
Reid Inouye said at the conclusion of the HIC Pro today. "Next
year we
are definitely looking to bigger and better things. We're
planning for
greater prize money as well as an additional purse for the
champion of
the series."
