Greetings boys and girls:

I'm a body boarder here in San Francisco, California. Recently my achilles
tendon,at the back of the ankle, has been sore, and if strained will pop with a
flash of pain. Not fun. Am taking anti inflammatory, which is helping with
soreness. Anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas? I wanna clear it
up so I can surf hawaii on vacation next month.

You better learn to stretch thoroughly before swimming-and maybe
consider a softer fin with less water resistance. Also try and get
Lodine-a great anti-inflammatory-(RX in the U.S., over the counter in
Mexico.)

Hey, There's a new fin out that's shaped like a shoe, have you seen it? Pretty
sure Churchill makes 'em, it seems that the stress could be allievated with it,
pick up Bodyuboarding and look for the add. Good Luck :)

The achilles tendonitis is not from the swim fins, but the repetitive motion of
your ankle, with the added resistance of the fins, in your swimming/boarding.
to treat achilles tendonitis, REST IT. No boarding for a couple weeks. ICE IT
3 times daily. Maximize your anti-inflammatories (assuming you don't have
stomach ulcers, or kidney disease), eg Advil 200mg, 3 tablets three times daily
(yes, 9/day), take with meals to avoid stomach upset. Range of Motion
exercises, eg moving your ankle up/down, like pedal of car. Good luck. Aloha.

and if you don't, you will soon

rest, massage therapy, accupuncture and clinical rehab
would be a much better approach. Herbal therapy
with emphasis on anti-inflamatory(yin) properties
would be useful also

Of course, by that time, the muscles will have weakened, causing
another type of pain when he gets back in the water, which can only be
overcome by exercise.

I'd recommend asking a bunch of surfers for medical advice.

Seriously, if you go to a sports physical therapist, with your fins, and tell
them all, they'll give you much better dope than we can. Good luck...
