You wonder why I'm such an A**H***?

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/uniontrib/tue/sports/news_mz1s1surfing.html

This was "love" in the late 50's at La Jolla High:

"One man, a former classmate of Butch's at La Jolla High, said Butch
would routinely lift him up and stuff him into a campus trash can as a
show of affection."

One can only imagine what "hate" was!

worry... you're still my "anti-hero!"

Clarity is not one of my virtues - or lack thereof -

More than once, plus Butch must have really loved me when he
duct-taped me to my board, and launched me thru the shorebreak at
Win****ea.

I'll live forever.

not." ->Mark Twain

My recollection of things that never happened is starting to get very
acute.

Luckily, for me and my yarn spinning, there are very few - people -
still alive that are able to challenge my memory.

The only people that sentence would offend are "belly sliders" and
canvas mattress riders. Leave surfing and go to the carnival where
it's not as offensive.

WhyBob what a nice thing to say about Butch (back here we call him "Da
Man"}.
From your style, I have an idea you're an Oxnard product. I think you
can be trusted. I could tell you of an incident that took place during
1959 in Hermosa Beach where the Hawaiians commandered a house on 5th
and Hermosa Ave. Greeting people at the door were Chubby Mitchell,
Baby Alan Gomes, Bla James, and Butch,
himself, and they were all drinking heavily. A near famous surfer was
challenged by Bla James, but the near famous surfer was saved by
Butch. Tommy Lee, too, was in attendance. These names are unfamiliar
with 99.9% of the readers of this newsgroup. WhyBob this was no
Guidopalooza event. You should have Bill Andrews tell you about Ronald
Patterson, Bla, and da' machine gun in La Jolla. Those were nice words
about "Da Man", thanks for the memories.

Bla James - yeah baby!

The first time I saw Bla was in 1961 or '62:

** I was walking back from Crystal Pier with Hanky Warner.

** I was working at the old Gordon and Smith Shop on Mission Blvd.

I saw this guy in front of us - in just his surf trunks - way tough
looking, even from the back -

I asked Hanky who the guy was -

Hanky sez:

"shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - it's Bla James, and he just got out of
jail for shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh murder."

This guy was big, and, as I witnessed later, a very good surfer.

(I have a tendency to have a very selective memory - oh really - and I
recently saw an old photo of Bla - he was every bit as big and tough
looking as I remembered).

The Patterson's, Gomes, Chubby, etc - what a crew - and Rakestraw's
machine gun (and anti-tank gun) - that's for another time.

My pleasure. Surfing is a much poorer place without these late, great
gentlemen. I remember well the slack key melodies led by Pop Patterson
and the all boys singing 'Ke lei a lea lei' and those unforgettable
words, " "Anna May Wong went too Hong Kong," etc. Our large Hawai'ian
brothers looked so domestic with those frying pans they used to take
to all the parties. Give my regards to Oxnerd.

Is there limit of years upon necesary euology?

I recall that BVA surfing at Ocean Beach, San Diego when I was a kid. This was
years prior to his Pipeline and Endless Summer Fame. I knew his name and
someone said that I could recognize him from his "face like a Tiki". Some of
his buddies made rides that made a big impression on me. I still recall them
to this day. It was the first time I had seen someone surf like a pro football
player.

>>>Today, it's a stereotype many post-modern surfers would rather erase.

Post modern!? I hate write stuff that is smarter than me, especially for a
sport so simple that you basically go right or you go left. Someone please
beat him up and take his lunch money.

>>>Surfing will always have a faction of rebels to remind us of our
nonconformist roots.

A faction? Oh, I thought independence was the basic of surfing. So that's why
people on alt.surfing have a hissy fit when people don't follow the party
line....comrade.

>>>"Butch was a free spirit," said Bryan, who's mulling the idea of legally
changing her last name to Van Artsdalen. "He wasn't going to commit (to a
relationship)."

This is typical magazine crap. Glorifying crap. Father a child and leave a
free spirit? What idiot wrote this? In my book this makes BVA a major loser.
He charge Pipeline..wow...even girls do that now.

"Maynards", now that brings back memories. Cheap eats like the Mexican food

Tweed - holding out on me huh -

Never heard of a Bla James - Hell's Angels beef at Maynard's!

I'll bet it was a beaut - who won?

Of course, if the Pattersons were at Bla's side, Butch must not have
been too far behind - whew - that must of been a good one, probably
one that I'm glad I didn't witness!

The Maynard's brawls were actually better than the ones at the Red
Mountain Inn.

At Maynard's the lines were clearly drawn between the bikers and the
surfers...the lines at The Red Mountain Inn were often very blurred.

Someday - if I can still remember yesterdays - I'll tell you about the
disagreement between Butch and a few marines at the infamous "Dana
Villa" in Dana Point.

This little brawl involved half the marines at Camp Pendleton versus
Butch, the Pattersons, Wayne Land, and the majority of the Hobie
Surfboards shapers, glassers, sanders, etc.

I was there for that one - I think -

These stories were common in the 1960s around Camp Pendelton aka Oceanside. I
recall older guys saying, "Hey, let's get drunk and beat up some Marines." My
opinion: long on story and nada on reality.

Mr. Kraptones

Just like any historical event, I think that it's important that one
understands the "haps" -

1. Time - early '60s

2. There was not a lot of love goin' around between the surfers who
wanted to surf Trestles, and the Marines who were determined NOT to
let us surf there.

3. I had heard that Butch had tried to enlist in the Marines, right
out of high school, but for some reason did not make the cut - that
may or may not be true, but if it's true, it might explain the reason
for the depth of Butch's angst towards the Marines, especially when
you factor in the "hide from the Marines drill" we had to go thru to
surf Trestles.

4. I was running the Gordon and Smith Shop in Dana Point at the time
- right across the street from the old Hobie Shop - Coast Hiway - This
area was the epicenter of the surf industry for a while.

5. I think I'm starting to remember things now -

My opinion of your opinion:

I have to consider the source of your opinion - your f-ing LIFE!

I guess at your end of "Camp Pendleton aka Oceanside" you lived a
great life of "long on story and nada on reality."

- In fact, I think that's the dream land in which you still live -

(this was not a slam on O-Side, just boob gleshna)

At the other end of Camp Pendleton there was reality - you shoulda
been there, boob, oh, but I forgot, you were living the good life at
where -- Tamacrack -- yeah I know, that's not O-Side, but close enough
for an engineering intern (that's me).

I know you were shredding it - at all the spots between The Mysterious
Disappearance of Mike Doyle and Igors - on your balsa stick.

Plus -

Everytime I want a check of my own sanity and reality - I read your
posts - and thank God that I didn't take whatever fork in the road, or
substances you did back then.

Plus -

I think Craig is waaaaay cool!

Plus -

Love and peace and good surfing to you as you rip Lake Tit-i-cocka on
your 12' windsurfer!

Can you drink the water there?

You go boob.

Jimmy -

This was pretty standard practice at WindanSea too - lotsa love goin'
around back then.

Nothing like a nice swim out to the kelp beds to start or end the day,
after being rolled down the bluff in a trash can.

At least we don't have the currents at WindanSea like those at
Coronado - that musta been one heck of a swim.

If I remember correctly - Dobransky and Butch became pretty good
friends - I think I attended more than one party with Butch and
Dobransky in the same room -now that's a memory that's hard to shake.

By the way - nice piece by Ahrens in the Coast News about Dobransky

By the way II - The boards you made for Los Viejos are insane - great

I ate at Maynards quite often. I could be wrongaon the days of the week, but
as I recall the menu was as follows:

Tuesday: Mexican Food (rolled tacos, beans and rice)
Wednesay: Spaghetti (with salad and bread)
Friday: Abalone (very expensive, never tried it)

Sunday: Breakfast (left over beans, rice and spaghetti sauce in a
sumptuous omelet, with white toast)

Served out the back door.
Dining was on the curb as I was not old enough to eat in the bar.

There was also Tugs Tavern for curb side spaghetti.

The best part of all of this was that one could eat from the proceeds of
soda bottle returns which only required an hour of aimless wandering and a
trip to the Food Basket to cash in.

Wonder whats for dinner tonight?

There was (still is?) a restaurant on the main road through Laguna
Beach in the 60's that served excellent, though no inexpensive food.
Driving south, it was on the mauka side of the old Coast Highway and,
if memory serves me, not far from where Peter the Greeter used to do
his thing. I think the restaurant was on a south facing corner and you
had do climb some steep steps before you got to the entrance. It
overlooked the highway and a cove. Great food.

I know two surfing Jimmy Fishers -

I went to LJ High School with one - he lived right across the street
from WindanSea - a very nice guy, a very good surfer, and certainly
not a bully. I haven't seen him in 40 years.

But, I'll bet you mean:

THE Jimmy Fisher - When I was a kid, he was one of the "WindanSea"
guys that scared me more than anyone else except maybe Tiny Brain -

Jim and I became good friends, in the late sixties when I managed PB
Surf Shop.

I had always thought that Jim was just a big, tough, bully.

After I met him, I found him to be extremely bright, articulate, and
very well educated -

Of course he was still a big - tough guy, but we got along fine -
finally.

Jim was getting back into serious surfing shape then, and Skip Frye
was making Jim's boards in the back of the shop - "For the Fish" -
beautiful single fin pintails - I think most of his - Fisher's -
boards were tinted yellow or gold?

I think Lee Emmett's first Frye may have been one of Fisher's old
boards - A "Gold Fish(er)" ??

Jim and I surfed Black's together for many years, and he was still
charging 'em the last time we surfed there - I haven't seen him in a
while, but I've heard he's doing very well.

Carl Eckstom - The mayor of WindanSea. Probably the nicest guy and
greatest craftsman ever in the surf industry. Carl's still around.

Pal Al - He's doing fine, and I saw him at the WindanSea Historical
Society's Party at WindanSea last summer.

Rube the Tube - I see Rube almost every day in the WindanSea area.
He's about the only one older than I am that still surfs there. He's
still as eccentric as ever.

Tiny Brain - Haven't seen him for a long time - still alive??

Chuck Hasley - I see Chuck all the time at WindanSea. He still
regularily attends all of the WindanSea Surf Club Meetings, and judges
a lot of the coalition contests -

I can remember watching Chuck surf the Shores, when he probably 25
years old or so - and we said: "Hasley sure is a good surfer for an
old man. Do you think we'll be surfing when we get that old?"

- I'm almost 60 now and still surfing every day - I guess I answered
my own question -

Snowman - I think I saw him at the WindanSea party too, but I'm not
sure. Snowman was never too mean to me when he came to the Shores,
but as I remember, he sure was a good surfer.

The guys you listed were all at least 3 years ( I think Carl's the
youngest in that bunch) older than I am - three to five years in age
difference, back then, may have been a lifetime.

These guys were among many of "my idols" when I was a Shores surf
nazi.

I'll be posting more of my recollections about these guys - if I can
remember to do so - and others on my site temporary site.

Warning - This is an Adult Site with Adult Content.

Warning II - One should be at least 40 years old, and have been
surfing for at least 25 years, before going to it.

Warning III - It's just a bunch of old surf crap about me and other
old guys, so maybe you should just stay home.

Dear Mr,Andrews:

Although my Mom didn't surfboard, she hung with a bunch of cool guys
from the South Bay called "The Double Duece Danglers", obviously from
22 St.Hermosa Beach. She went to a Catholic school called American
Martyrs in Manhattan Beach. Each Spring, Hodges station wagon arrived
at 22nd St. with Snowman, Pal Al, Rube the Tube and, Mom said, a guy
called Bill Kemp. She wants me to ask whatever happened to Kemp, Buzzy
Bent, and Woody Eckstrom? She hopes nobody's forgotten them. Mom
suggested "THE" Jimmie Fisher rode huge Makaha in the mid 50's, loved
classical music, and several years ago was involved in a horrific auto
accident.
Mom said after reading all this sniveling about bodysurfers and
bodyboarders how do you tolerate this newsgroup? This, Mr.Andrews, is
from me: It doesn't make any difference what people say about you,
when they stop talking is when you should start worrying. Your long
time admirer,

Both the large, and small, versions showed up on my end,
through three different servers/accounts. Used IE 5.5,
and also Netscape.
Even the large one loaded fairly quickly,
while connected at about 50k.

The eaterie didn't kill the surf so much as the

I surfed (and suffered) there several times in my pre-wetsuit days.
The water was nut numbing, but the rides were worth it. Can't remember
eating at Stanleys - I was well tanked up before I got that far -
maybe that's why they went out of business.

I could start a 3rd world store with all the 56k's people have offered
me for free. When I'm ready to jump into the future, it'll be whole
hog. I want a laptop with a 10" screen, a built-in GPS, and a wireless

10" screen. That's so I can use it as a digital replacement for the

My point was that the project which caused the
