See Surfer Magazine (May 1998 Issue "North Shore Undercover", Vol 39 #5)
page 92. Pictures & short clip on Jock & son Gavin.

10 years ago I was living on the North Shore. Early one morning Jocko came
over to the house I was living at to visit his best friend and my landlord,
Richard Oliphant. He wanted to show Richard his brand new Race surfboard he
just had shaped for him. It hadn't even been waxed yet.

It was a beautiful 10' surfboard designed for good North Shore small
surf.. That morning was beautiful and sunny. Crystal clear sky with no clouds.
The wind, for once, was straight off shore, not the usual side wind trades. The
surf was perfect 3-5' . It was as good as I'd seen Chuns all year.

Jocko had to go to work roofing houses. He said it was a shame he couldn't
try out the board that day. It looked like the ultimate day to ride a longboard
and I hadn't been on one all winter. Jocko, Richard, and I were standing there
on Richard's lawn watching Chuns wrapping and bowling perfectly.

While Richard and Jocko were stll admiring Jocko's new board I took a bold
stab and asked Jocko if I could borrow his new board for the day.

Richard started laughing scornfully at me. "You got to be kidding", he
said, "you think Jocko's going to let you ride his new board he hasn't even
waxed yet? You got some nerve". I shrugged my shoulders and smiled sheepishly.
I figured it was worth a try.

Jocko held the board in his hands thoughtfully and then handed it off to
me. While I stood there, kind of shocked, he said to Richard, "How can I stop
this guy from having the time of his life?".

And I did. I surfed until dark. Hope Jocko didn't mind a couple of small
pressure dings from my feet surfing so hard.

Jocko's cool and he rips!

Surfer's Journal had an in-depth article on Jock last year (I'll dig up and
post the exact issue later.)
Very worthwhile and interesting reading.
