Hello all,

let me tell you first that I'm no surfer at all. Still, I have a weird
question for you. What kind of equipment would one need to go surfing? The
background: I'm a student of architecture and our assignement is to build
something called Surfer's Paradise. The imaginary lot is somewhere north of
San Francisco and among other things this paradise is supposed to contain a
shop. It also should contain a school and a bar or café. Any suggestions of
what you would want to find in such a place would be greatly appreciated.

1.) What items would you like to find in a surfer's shop at a beach?

2.) What does a surfschool look like? Do they provide equipment? What would
that be? How much space would they need?

3.) What kind of gastronomy would you expect at a beach? Would you frequent
it only during daytime or would you stay there and throw maybe wild parties
at night, (provided it had the right flair)? Do you throw wild parties at
all or are you early to bed to catch the first waves in the morning?

Please consider that I'm a student and this is no real project, so there's
no money in it, in case some should think they get cheated if they tell and
then get no compensation. You'd just help someone whose wildest sporting
activity is Scottish Country Dancing and who lives miles away from the next
ocean and many, many more miles from Northern California. ;-)) Thanks in
advance.

Since I surf somewhere north of San Francisco and it is beginning to
get cold, I would like a spa attached to this Surfer's Paradise with a
hot tub, steam room and sauna (maybe massage.) The rest of AS can go
to the wild parties. I'm staying in the jacuzzi.

Good shaper, good board selection, repair shop, great prices, FREE WAX.

The structural part of a surfschool looks like a big hut where you can store
a lot of indestructo boards, wetsuits, & have room for some benches & video.
The rest of it looks like a beach. Preferably, one with waves.

Fish Taco huts at every mile marker.

No housing or buildings within 1/4 mile of the high tide mark. Except Fish
Taco huts.

Wild parties when no waves.

a.

PS You can't build Surfer's Paradise. Especially if it has a surfschool &
places for wild partiers. Fish Taco huts are an exception.

Sorry for the silly question, but what would a (?) shaper be?

Yeah, I get the drift, but then: Who am I to tell my professor stuff like
this? <G> All that counts at the end of the semester is the fact that I
passed (finally). ;-)

Please forward a full-frontal photograph in your smallest bathing suit
for posting to the alt-surfing hub. After we peruse your ass(ets), we
will make the determination as to the scope and breadth of guidance we
will be able to provide.

The camp will need lot's of webcams for each cove and point up and down
the nearby coast... with autofocus and zoom.

First show me a pic of you in your smallest trunks (or preferably nude, with
a hard-on) and I will consider the amount of guidance I will let /you/ give
to me.

Money being no object I would want a artifical reef shaped perfect for lefts
and rights, and a wave making machine to lift the swell on a small day (
think this is a joke at Sun City in South Africa this exists ) but I would
like the wave making machine to be syncronised with the incoming sets to
compliment them, now that is surfer paridise, throw in a pier to jump off
from or create a rip tide to assist in paddeling out, fitted out with pure
white sands, and a cosy pub.
Aceface.

Grüß dich Ursula,

Real surf shops for real surfers sell surfboards and surfboard
accessories. Many "surf shops" are really just clothing stores selling
brands of clothing that are advertised in surf magazine. Every surf
shop has some of that over-priced clothing (because surfboards don't
generally pay the bills), but in your surfer's paradise it should be a
"real" surf shop .
Surfers love to party! A place for a beach bonfire seems like a no-
brainer. Some kind of palapa stage for a surf guitar band overlooking
the beach and/or the terrace. Surfers would rather mosh and pogo than
do Scottish Country Dancing (not that there's anything wrong with
that...). If you get enough drinks in them, surfers have been known to
start conga lines and walk like Egyptians. There has been some
crossover between ska, punk, and surf guitar music over the years. The
band leader must play a Stratocaster with a Frender tube amp.

Surfers love to eat! Maybe Hawaiian traditions, like a roast pig in a
sand pit and siamen, mixed with Mexican traditions, like a taqueria
that serves fish tacos, taco de langua, carne asada, tacos al pastor.
Menudo on Saturdays. Cold beers and fruit juices. A full-on fruiteria
selling smoothies and fruit juices. And some great California cuisine,
with some vegetarian dishes.

Have a good beer selection. Northern California is a former hops
growing regions, and has a very sophisticated appreciation for
boutique beers. A microbrewery onsite would be good, with several in
house beers on tap. Beers should be named after local surf spots.
Northern CA is also a huge wine producing area, so a modest wine list
of well priced local products would be good. Surfers usually aren't
down with fancy froo froo drinks (no blue curacao and no little
umbrellas), nor do they go for martinis. They might drink tequila. If
they drank a tropical fruit daquiri it must never be served with a
whipped cream dollop.

Surfers like Hawaiiana- a tiki bar would be an appropriate theme if it
were not too kitschy. Waitresses in string bikini tops and grass
skirts or sarongs would be a nice touch.

Northern California invented the fern bar. The bar and restaurant area
should feel open, with vegetation blurring the distinction between
indoors and outdoors, and a stone terrace overlooking the sea. North
of San Francisco Monterey cypresses and California bay laurels make
more sense ( and convey a better sense of place) than palm trees, but
if you could possibly coax palm to grow in a warm microsite, they
would add to the look. There should be a great view of whatever surf
spot is right out front and there should be a place to project surf
movies on a wall.

OK, that's all I've got for you . Rock on, chica!

Liebe Grüße,
Surfer Bob
