I was wonder what other people thought about using your disability
this way. A guy from Manitoba managed to get released from prison on
a hardship plea after allegedly throwing a steak knife at his
girlfriend, pulling her hair so he could punch her and throwing a
container or urine on her (all separate occasions)!

He claimed he couldn't do anything because he's in a wheelchair and
even though he had breached conditions before, and these all happened
when he was drunk. You can find out more about what happened here:

My question is, how does everyone else feel about him playing his
"disability card" like that? What kind of message is it sending out?
What do you think should have happened to him (there's a poll included
in the link)?

I think they should have tried to figure out a suitable situation for
him, but it disgusts me that he got away so easily!

Anyway, I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts on this!

I do not support letting criminals out of their Judical Punishment so they
can go be better Criminals.
Their Judical punishment should include rehabilitation in the form of Clean
Up, Get your Act Straight, learn a Skill to be a productive member of
Society all from the confines of your tent behind razor wires meant to keep
you from doing stupid stuff to otherwise Nice People. Or, you can Opt for
avoidance of political prosecution in another Country of your Choice; say
Iraq or Russia or even Siam.
We'll even file the paperwork for you.

More:
http://accessibility.net.nz/blog/use-the-disability-card-get-out-of-jail-free/

His lawyer sought to move him to a larger court/jail where there were
accessible restroom facilities and where he could get in for a hearing
(even for a video hearing - the doors were too narrow for him to get in
for even that!). He was denied his pain medications while awaiting a
hearing.

So it sounds as if this never even made it to a hearing, let alone being
in prison and released.

That is a classic example of irresponsibility. The victim should
be convicted of a crime. Getting away from someone in a wheelchair
should be easy for an adult human being.

That is a classic case of "I'm an irresponsible defenseless idiot,
I need government to remove the threat because mommy never taught
me how to walk away from it".

It's perverse, when someone acts so defenseless and government
plays "daddy". Unfortunately, it's becoming more common.
