The first thing I noticed after having the operation on a Friday afternoon
was that there was NO WAY I'd be able to return to work on the Monday as
many seem able to do. In fact I was in severe pain for some time. By the
Tuesday I was still doubled up and could hardly move so I went back to the
doc who carried out the operation. He diagnosed a haematoma which turned out
to be an incorrect diagnosis but at the time that's what he thought was
causing the problem. He prescribed some anti-inflammatories and sent me
home. Two weeks on I was still in severe pain. I did return to work but
doing literally anything was painful. I couldn't stand up, sit down or
anything. I did find that wearing a jockstrap did help some but I was
becoming very concerned by now. I posted regularly here on this newsgroup
and got a load of good advice.
It's at this time that you discover a lot of horror stories on the internet
and believe me there are many. Doctors, at the pre-op consultation tend to
gloss over the negative aspects of vasectomy and many don't even recognise
PVP as a real condition. They're wrong. There's no doubt that for some,
vasectomies have had catastrophic effects on lives and perfectly healthy
males have had the operation and been disabled by its effects. It's
important to bear this in mind BEFORE the operation, BUT it's equally as
important to get things into perspective. For the vast majority of men,
vasectomy continues to be a safe, effective method of birth control.
For me the healing process was very slow. I was in near constant pain for
over 3 months but I can say now that largely I am pain-free. I still do have
the odd bad day however but these are relatively isolated. Regarding sex and
the feeling of ejaculation, things haven't changed and it's just as
enjoyable as before.
So to sum up ... I still don't regret having the operation but for some it's
not the easy ride that many say it is. I was literally partially disabled
for at least 2 months and I'll never forget that, but the important thing
for me was that it did get better although this took some 3.5 months. For
those who are not having an easy time, please bear this in mind. The healing
process for the vast majority is usually quick, for some like me, its
lengthy, for others, they don't ever recover and regret having the operation
wholeheartedly.
You have to look at statistics here and for that reason I would recommend
the operation. All the males in my family have had it with no problems and
bear in mind that most people who come to this newsgroup are having problems
... that's why they're here and that tends to give a biased view on things.
That said, I, in no way wish to belittle or undermine those who are
suffering. I had my share of that and it was horrible. You guys continue to
have my sincere sympathies and I hope you are on the road to relief and
recovery.
Kind regards
Dave
Hi Dave. Thanks for this update. I am very glad you are now back to
normal. Did you ever learn from your doctor what caused the extra long
recovery in your case, if not hematoma, as he originally suspected?

Some years ago I was diagnosed with a varicocele. At the time it didn't seem
to be affecting my sperm count and I've since fathered two children. Also,
as it wasn't particularly painful (although it played up from time to time)
it was decided to just leave it alone. I suspect this may have delayed my
recovery although this hasn't been confirmed.
I think what I've learnt here is that there are three groups of people where
vasectomies are concerned: those that recover immediately; those that
recover over a long period of time and those that simply don't recover. For
those in group 2 and to those to a lesser extent in group 3, I just wanted
to let them know that there is hope.
I wouldn't say things were totally the same as before the op so I must
conclude that the procedure wasn't 100% successful. I do still have the odd
uncomfortable day, maybe once or twice a month, but life in general is back
to normal.
Kind regards
Dave
