I am a 31 year old woman with undignosed ts. I
have not found a doctor yet in the area that
I live in who seems to know anything about ts.
They all say that since I don't have vocal then
I don't have it. Anyhow I started ticking 10
years ago after I had my first child. (6 mts
after he was born) Does anybody know if hormone
changes could trigger ts. Because I had no tics
at all as a child. I am currently taking Luvox
with some success. Does anybody eles use this
and have any luck. I also have an 11 year old
who started symptoms when he was four, but it
is just now becoming noticable, but I am afraid
to try him on any meds. because of the side
effects. I would hate to see him go thru the
same hell I went thru just trying to find a
drug that worked. I would love to talk with
anyone who would like to chat. Any maybe help
someone with any questions they may have.

Hi M-

There is some evidence that TS activity does fluctuate with hormonal swings.
Many women with TS experience an increase in tics before their periods, and
there is a study being done in Chicago about the influence of the menstrual
cycle on TS.

My TS was mild and undiagnosed until my late 30's, when it became severe. I
know of other women who've experienced the same thing. While I know of no
study about this as yet, it seems to happen quite often.

But, just as anything that puts stress on the body may exacerbate tics,
certainly it makes sense that hormonal fluctuations can do so too.

As for whether or not you have TS, some people are less strict on the "must
have a vocal tic" rule than others. Even if one keeps that criterion for
diagnosis, a vocal tic is basically any tic that makes a sound. It can
include very subtle tics like throat clearing, soft grunts or humming,
sniffing, etc. Unless someone, doctor or lay person, is experienced with TS,
some vocal tics might be overlooked.

As for your son, there is no need to consider medication for tics unless
they become so intrusive and/or painful that it gets in the way of
completing day to day tasks. For more information about TS and treatment,
