sinus pain medication???

problems, am hoping some one can give me advice on relief from the pain.
For the past 12 years or so I have used suphedrine for the pressure and
pain, was originally prescribed by doc, now I buy it over the counter. I
have never had side effects or problems from it. Have been on thyroid
medication about a month now, had horrible pain for the past week or so
and finally took the suphedrine to relieve it--- OMG--thought I was
gonna die, started shaking bad, heart pounding, ringing in ears, full
blown panic attack etc--evidentially I can no longer use this for some
reason--does any one know of something I can use that will not WIRE me
up like that but that will not knock me out either (I also use Flonase
nasal spray daily for allergies) any info will be appreciated---Hugs to

There is a newsgroup alt.support.sinusitis that is really good. The people
there are extremely big on nasal irrigation with a water pik and nasal adaptor.
A couple of doctors post there and they have good web sites. One of my
daughters has a tendency to get sinusitis, probably fungal, but when she
irrigates (she uses Rhino Flo-- kind of an expensive version of water pik but
just for sinuses) she can keep this at bay. The nasal saline solutions are OK
but the full irrigation works better.
There are other suggestions in the newsgroup-- stuff like drinking pao d arco
tea, whatever.
Some like the cortisone nasal spray, and some don't!! They say it depresses
the immune system and actually causes sinusitis to worsen!!

Am I glad to read this.
For the past 4 to 5 years I have been plagued by sinus infections-had
allergy test several times, all negative, and virually have lived on
antibiotics!
After being diagnosed as hypo my doctor said that the sinus problems
should clear up.
PLEASE tell me this is true.

will raise blood pressure. Other posts in this thread relate to allergy
relief with antihistamines; fine, but antihistamines do NOT affect blood
pressure. The reason decongestants carry the warnings for thyroid patients
relates more to your heart than to the thyroid itself. HyPER patients
are already at risk with their hearts. HyPO patients not so much, BUT
wait until you have stabilized for some time on the correct dosage. While
you were hypo, your heart wasn't under a lot of stress, so starting on
replacement dosages is a major change to its work load; it doesn't need
added stress at this point. Later (months, typically) you probably can
return to using decongestants....with all due caution, of course. One
of the main difficulties with decongestants is the rebound effect, making it
very difficult for someone who has relied upon them for relief to go cold
turkey off of them. Ask your doctor about it, and you may get some
temporary relief with another prescription decongestant.

7 months...before that I felt I was having them constantly...not sure if it
will happen for you as dramatically...but I sure hope it does.....sinus
headaches are pretty rare for me now also...B

not a doctor. I just share $.02 worth from experience. I've had my share of
sinus problems too. When I am where I am supposed to be with my meds I am
great, when I am off a bit, I am miserable.
It will take a bit of time for your meds to get you back to normal. Be
patient and hang in there.

It seems that this varies from person to person so I will be very
careful not to expect too much.

to all who posted re this---God bless u all - I have asked my daughter
to check EVERY bottle in my med chest and toss any thing out that has
warnings for thyroid patients--advise other newbies to do same--I swear
I thought the sinus med was gonna kill me and I'm noy ready to leave my

My doctor has placed me on Nasonex and Claritin for a bad sinus
infection and getting over pneumonia. He checked with my eye doctor and
advised I had open angle glaucoma so it was okay. I advised him that I
had Graves and he checked and said it would be okay.
Check with your doctor and see if this can help.

I just had to write in reply to this. Sinus problems are (in my mind
anyway) related to the thyroid problems. Until you get your dosage right,
you will have sinus problems. My big change came when I finally added in
the T3 to my normal T4 meds. In the meantime, you shouldn't be suffering
the side effects of OTC drugs and in pain. So here are a couple of
suggestions. Very bad sinus problems come about when the sinuses are
infected. For this you need antibiotics, quite strong ones and for more
than two weeks, possibly you may have to take them for a month. You must
rest when you take the antibiotics. At least for the first week. Sleep as
much as you need to. (I laughed when I was told this as I had a 2 yr old!)
Have steamy showers and blow your nose afterwards. Put drops of olive oil
into your ears after each shower -- always-- this will stop them plugging up
and putting more pressure on the EarNoseThroat area. Have lots of vit C at
least 1000mcgs a day, the long-lasting ones are best but take them with
food. Take advil regularly while you are in pain--take the dosages spot on
time. Have a friend massage your face with very gently movements when the
pain lessens a bit, or if you have to do this yourself. With oil is good,
but just gently press around the cheekbones and around the eyebrow bones in
a circular motion. Get your blood in there.
Stay warm at all times. Getting cold decreases your chance of fighting
infection.
Eat fruit.
I promise you if you follow this advice you will get better. If you don't
have that month or lots of time to sleep, at least do the oil in the ear
thing and take extra Vit C. Go to the doctor again if you need to. If I
save you one day of pain this extremely long message will have been worth
it.

I was thinking my sinus pain was caused by the weather. I never
really realized it could have been caused by my hypo! I guess I'll try
what you said to and wait until this new dosage starts really working.
